All of the newer 4.6l are aluminum blocks, I believe everything after 05, but thats a guess. Ford quite using the iron blocks on everything including the mustang, expedition, etc. As for the aluminum explorers, they had them back in 02 I think, somewhere in the there they started putting V8's in them and thats when they started using aluminum blocks. All of the explorers before then were v6's I think. I do know that they are a bit cheaper than trying to find one out of a cobra or mark 8. I found both of mine for less than 50 bucks, so the deals are out there, you just have to find the right idiot,,,,,, I mean guy that doesnt know what he's throwing away.

All the factory boosted modulars are iron block, with the exception of the GT supercar's 5.4L. All of the factory 2v applications I'm aware of are iron block, as well.

All Mustang 3v and n/a 4v motors are aluminum.

Are the "Explorers" that you're thinking of that came with an aluminum block actually the Lincoln Aviators? Those had a 4v 4.6L, but that's the extent of my knowledge about them.

Got it!!! Only after 2005 when all 4.6 blocks were made of aluminum did the Eplorer get the aluminum block. The only 4.6's to get an aluminum block prior where vehicles with DOHC which the explorer did not have.
