My Check Engine Problem

I've been driving around for a month with this light on but now my inspection is up next month (I live in a town with built-in police so I can't just forgo it). The light went on because the cracked lip of the fuel hose inside the fuel door is sending an emissions signal to the ECU. This is a half-ass explanation of what happened I actually don't know exactly what it is..the guy ran a diagnostic on it and said something on top of that that I did'nt understand...something about the way the car burns fuel on startup in the morning...Does this sound familiar to anybody? Ive been told to take it to Ford I know they charge a lot so I don't need to hear that again but I can't fix this myself...I don't even know really what it is thats wrong. All I know is that theres' no damage being done to the car by driving like this (at least for now) and there are no other obvious related problems right now. Its idling and driving and shifting fine, but won't pass inspection unless this problem is fixed. I think the reason that little o-ring cracked in the first place because of the nozzles at the gas station. If this sounds like something familiar to anybody who does engine servicing drop a line for me. Thanks.

You could very well have a crack fuel filler neck. Not exactly sure what code you have or exactly whats going on but im gonna assume you have a gross leak in the evap system.

That sounds exactly like what the mechanic told me, since I'm not messing around with that gas tank myself (not after what happened out here this week with that explosion) I'm gonna see if Ford can do nothing but verify thats what is causing the problem. That sounds right though, do you know if this is something thats immediately harmfull to any part of my fuel system? As I said so far the car has been running and starting perfectly. Thanks again. Greg
P.S. When I open the fuel door I can see a two millimeter crack on the lip of the fuel pump assembly (from the gas nozzel), now as far as I know it goes much deeper than that even though I can't see it.

Can I replace this without removing or lowering the gas tank?

Remove the three 8mm bolts holding the fuel filler neck under the fuel door.
heres a write up on how to remove your gas tank but you may not need to drop the whole tank to remove the filler neck
good luck hope this helps

Filler Pipe
Removal

1. Remove the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to Tank in this section.
2. Remove the bolts from the filler pipe housing.

3. Remove the bolts from the filler pipe rubber boot-to-floor pan.
4. Remove the hose attached to the upper part of the pipe.
5.Rotate the pipe downward to clear the filler pipe pocket and pull it into the trunk area.
Installation

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Thats straight from the Ford manual
