Transmission Warm Up?

hey guys i have a weird question. I know that the transmission should not have to warm up to act the way it really should. But if my car sits for a while and gets cold. when i crank it up and go. it grinds a little goin into 2nd,3rd,and 4th. but after i drive a while it doesnt do that. A while back i missed 3rd speed shiftin really bad and i laid off of speed shiftin for a while and i tried again and missed second pretty bad too and since then it does that only when its cold. i changed a throw out bearing in it before all of this and put fluid in it so it should be fine with the fluid. but any suggestions help. and also. How much will a short throw reduce grinding because my car acts totally different to speed shiftin. its WAY faster.

this is a common problem among 80% of 99-04 5spd GTs with the 3650 in them. the short throw wont give you any less grinding per say but itll pretty much guarantee you'll never miss 3rd again.. not sure how u missed 2nd lol

you've got to be about the worst driver in the world and you miss a gear with oh.. say.. a Steeda TRI AX =) get one you'll love it

ford has issued a TSB for this problem. if your car is still under warranty, go to them and get it fixed

Your syncros' may be screwed up, this can happen when you consistantly pound that shifter into gear and at different rpms' and speeds. I've missed gears before too when I used to beat the hell out of my 96 GT it ended up killing the stock clutch, but I always start my car up in the bitter cold and let it warm up...Then when I'm shifting I'll do it gently at first. I'll depress the clutch all the way and start pulling on the stick until it wants to go into gear smoothly...its hard to explain but try not to keep banging those gears transmission repair is hard and costly. I've heard short-shifters are not for the weak when it comes to an expensive Mustang, someone told me you can HEAR every gear being shifted with a preceding knock...That would keep ME in a constant state of paranoia.

well... i actually have a 97 gt. but i have the pi motor is why im posting on here. so i have a t45 trans. i figured syncros too... but. it would be 1 and 2, then 3 and 4, then 5 and rev. but 2 and 3 are the only ones i have a problem with after driving a while. thats only if i speed shift. but 3rd catches all the time when i race. it might not slip out of gear but it DEF doesnt wanna go in with a gently shove and without a good grinding for the onlookers.

It it is a TR3650 I heard that if you only put 3.4 quarts of Redline DT4 in, it might solve the problem...

Cold gear grinding is fine. It won't hurt anything. Just go easy on it through the gears when still cold.

+1 on that. It happens all the time. Just let her warm up.
+1 on the Steeda Tri-Ax too.... Def worth it. You won't miss anything.

MGW shifter FTW!

Why in the hell would you not let your car warm up? What mechanical device with alot of moving parts and gears works well cold? My car does the same thing if you don't warm it up. It's winter for gods sakes! As for missing gears well you pretty much suck at shifting. I don't know if the short throw will solve all your problems, but it certainly can't hurt. LOL
