Cut stock springs? How much?

My car is used as a daily driver but sees the strip 2 to 3 times a month.
Right now the springs, shocks and struts are all stock.

I ordered some Strange 10-way adjustable struts and shocks that will be installed shortly.

After moving the battery to the trunk, and pulling out the A/C, the car sits higher in the front than it did stock (or at least it feels like it!).

I'd like to use my stock springs, since I'm not into twisty road running and I'd like the car to still be as comfortable as stock, and still do well at the strip. However, I'd like to lower the front of the car about 1", and maybe lower the back about 1/2".

Question is, can I cut the stock springs to accomplish this and be satisfied with the results? I don't want to drop the car enough to require new caster/camber plates.

My car has eibach front drag springs with a coil cut, and stock GT rear springs with a coil cut. I know my car doesnt help with your front spring question, but gives you an idea for the rear.

Your not changing the spring rate so how much you cut out is how much it will drop. if you cut out one coil youll drop the thickness of one coil. Usually on coil is the most you want to cut. The length of the spring and the spring rate and ment to work together, too low with out enough spring rate would be bad.

Thank you for the responses so far.

I like the way your car looks DSG!

I may have 1/2 a coil cut off if that would work (dunno).

god cutting springs is the most ghetto way of lowering a car and should not be done.

Well, I was looking at the Ford Racing spring sets but I didn't want firmer springs. I just want to improve the rake a little bit and restore the balance of the car. I also don't want to make it any harder to launch the car at the strip.

get a set of eibach springs, you wont regret it. i've got eibach prokit springs and prodamper shocks/struts and its waaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than stock. cutting the springs will not improve anything, it'll make things worse.

Or you could get a nice set of springs and NOT cut your stockers.

DO NOT CUT SPRINGS. go buy a set of drag springs. if you take it to the strip as often as you say this should be a no-brainer! You wanna improve straight line performance of your suspension... go buy the right springs. You could even go buy a set of lowering springs like the Eibachs or the H&Rs or the Steedas. This is also the right thing to do because you want a spring to match the performance of your struts/shocks. when it come to suspension work the "whole" is always more valuable than the "sum of the parts" meaning your parts should work together better than they do individually. a shock w/o a matching spring or vice versa is like a dick without a condom, it might seem fun at first, but its gonna come back to bite you...

Ricers cut springs to lower their cars. Terrible idea.

Like dansgt said, eibach springs are very good, go with them. Do the job right or not at all.

I cut mine and so did weems, car rides just fine to me and looks perfect, only way to really get the exact height you want, i havent found any that lower it as low as i wanted mine, I cut 1 1/2 in the front 1 1/4 rear, weems cut the same amount, look at his mach 1. so sexy, quit bashing the spring cutting, as long as you get them equal its fine, the springs are linear not progressive, chop em bro. be custom

everyone who says "cutting springs is a bad idea"... "cutting springs are for ricers" are people who have never cut springs before and read too much on the internet. or they have cut springs and cut too much. for the rear, cutting one coil on a stock spring is really no big deal. it will lower the car, and still work fine at the drag way. friend of mine has a 10.01 cobra cutting 1.37 60' with stock gt rear springs cut 3/4 a coil. I never cut a stock front spring so i wont say anything on that, but my drag spring up front cut one coil is a perfect stance, works at the track and doesnt make the car ride all that much different than stock. Plus, i have strange 10 ways all the way tight on the street ..

I've seen Chip Foose cut springs to different lengths to get cars to sit the way he likes them. I don't think he'd go through all the work of restoring a car and then do something to f**k the suspension up at the last minute.

This is incorrect. When you cut springs, you increase the stiffness proportional to how much spring you remove.
