What to do... shortblock questions

My motor is making some wicked lower end noises... its time to give it some new life.

The car is a 2001 with a 4.6 SOHC motor -

the block is a 96 romeo and the heads are from a 2001.

The heads are completely rebuilt with less than 1000 miles on em.

I have a set of Comp Cams 262s that arent isntalled, but I have the upgraded springs in the new heads.

My question is this - whats the best route to go? where can I get a stock-type short block for cheap? is it worth it to get some sort of built shortblock, will it cost me that much more? I will install the cams when I swap the block.

Is buying a junk yard mod motor that bad of an idea? (until i can afford to build the motor i really want).

Any input is appreciated!

I'd just save up and buy a forged shortblock assembly, you might as well build the bottom end to be strong while your planning on re-building it anyway. If you do decide to go the junk yard route, make sure you have the block inspected by a good machine shop or somewhere that can really take a close look at it, cause you can't really be sure of what your getting. MMR makes affordable shortblocks that are very good, so does D.S.S. racing and Coast High Performance just to name a few. Good luck with the build!

hmm, it seems like the right prices and whatnot, but it just seems to me i can get a stock longblock for only a few hundred more, no? I figured a stock-style short block would be cheaper.

I get what your sayin, but building on top of forged shortblock as opposed to a new stock spec longblock allows you a lot more options for the future of your car and any power goals you have. and even if your not interested in big power numbers, you can still drive the car hard and not worry about any bottom end failure. bottom line is, when re-building a motor don't skimp on the price, it's better to save up for another month or two, then to have to re-build again because the same part broke or wore out again!

oh ya, i almost forgot, i know this from my own dumb-ass experience. i threw a rod, bought a stock spec shortblock from a local salvage yard, then threw a rod again a year later! FML! Still breaking in my MMR motor right now, but if i somehow manage to hurt this one, i'm parting out my mustang and buyin a go-ped!
