Alternator Whine

My 1999 Mustang GT is making a high pitched whining noise whenever I rev up my engine. I have concluded that the sound is most likely coming from the alternator. The alternator is working properly; the whining noise isn’t hurting anything I don’t think. Anyone else had this problem before? If so, is there an affordable way to resolve the noise

Is the whine anything that I should be worried about? Could it be that my alternator might be starting to go bad? I've read other posts on various websites about people who have had similar problems as mine, and they all pointed out that the alternator eventually stopped working.

Thanks for your input. I plan on taking it to have it looked at within the next week or so. I'll keep you updated on the results.

AutoZone or Advanced Auto or the like will test your alternator for free.

It may be the belt, but I don't know how you would check it or not. I use belt dressing and the belt sounds fine, but the whine is still there. I'm pretty sure its the alternator. Thanks for the input though.

I might be a pulley, if water gets on one of those the bearing could burn pretty easily. That happened when my engine got rained on, the smooth idler pulley was making this HORRIBLE loud whine you could hear from down the block. I replaced it and everything was fine...originally I thought it was my alternator also. If theres a problem with the alternator though, Im pretty sure you'll know it when you turn the key.

It could be many things, but getting into pully's and all is too much for me. I would have to let a dealership work with it some problably.

NOT THE DEALERSHIP!!!

Not unless you are uner warranty. The dealership with either rape you or chage you to tell you they can't fix it. Fnd a local garage with a good reputation.

Oh no pulleys are easy to change! The hardest part is moving that tensioner pulley (the one on the top left with the arm attached) to get the belt off..That thing is under so much pressure you may need an extra set of hands to hold it in place. After that, the pulleys just unbolt right out.

+1 on not taking it to the dealership.. They charge to tell you they cant fix it. They charge you for work they didnt actually do. Local shops are the best....

+1, but make sure the local shop you take your car to won't rip you off.

I would either just replace the alternator (it also gives you a chance to upgrade it) or just get the old one rebuilt. Like someone else said, Advance Auto will check it for free.

Appreciate it everyone. Well it turns out that my car is having some other problems that need fixing at the moment also, so I'm going to take it to a local shop tomorrow and have it worked on. Thanks for all the replies.
