When I replaced my studs, I was able to take a 1/2" drill bit and run it at a slight angle through the bolt hole in axle. I tilted the drill toward the center of axle so the tip of the bit was toward the outside of the ABS ring. Just a very slight ovaling of the hole allowed the bolt to pass the ABS ring and be installed.

Im pretty sure you "supposed" to remove the wheel hub and do it that way.
I would do like Jazzer said, just dont round out the entire hole or the stud will just spin in place instead of letting the lug nut tighten down.

you couldnt get the wheel lock off with a smaller socket and a hammer?

^ correct

It is certainly proper to remove the axles and have the studs pressed in place. I actually didn't really oval the entire hole, but rather notched the inside edge of front of axle and the outside edge of back-side of axle. This allowed the bolt to fit at just enough angle to clear the ABS ring, but VERY minimal damage to the axle itself.

It may not have been exactly 1/2" drill bit, but just small enough to fit at about a 30° angle so the sides of bit would actually do the ovaling on both sides of the axle.

Nice. Thats probably the same route I would have went.

GTVert - when you go to "press" the wheel stud in once its through the hole, make sure you put a piece of thick metal or thick washer and run one of your other lug nuts down the stud to "draw" it in. If you dont have anything to put in between, you will damage the nut (which will usually happen regardless) and damage the hub.

What I usually do is take a nut to the local auto parts store and have them get me an open nut with a flat top. Then you can put the flat side facing the hub when you tighten it on and dont have to worry about damaging it

got the 2 back wheel lock nuts out.. i started drilling the stud and upsizing bits until most of the stud was removed and then used a screwdriver and hammer to get the rest out... not pretty.

oh man... that doesnt sound fun

When I worked as a tire installer we used to jam a socket on there and hope for the best. If that didnt work, there is actual wheel lock removers that are nothing but sockets with reverse threads inside so as you try to take it off (after youve jammed it on) the threads actually grip tighter on the lock...

Of course, without air tools neither of these methods work.

I drilled out a stud once, and it was NOT fun. of course it was a rear stud on a huge 3500 dually diesel too, so install was worse.
