Supercharged 2002 GT....running lean, BOV problems...HELP!
Hello. I am new to the forum, and to mustangs in general. My dad just gave me as a gift his 2002 Mustang GT convertible. All I know about it is that it is supercharged (don't know what kind, or how many lbs of boost it's making), but I have no idea what else is in there. It has an upgraded transmission (5spd), but I don't know what kind. I also don't know if he upgraded the injectors, fuel pump, etc. It didn't seem to be running right, so I took it to a shop that deals mainly in imports (we just happened to be there for my boyfriend's car) and the tech took it for a test run and did some data logging. He made the following observations:
He said that in 5th gear, under load, the car was running up to 36% lean. He also said that the BOV seems to be sticking open, which causes the car to keep moving when I let off the gas. Also, he said that there might be some head gasket issues that prevent cold coolant from circulating when it's supposed to (?) I will call my dad tomorrow to see exactly what was done to the car, but I'm not sure he knows. He took it to a shop in Englishtown, NJ (or thereabouts), and had them build it for him. The car is now in CA, San Mateo to be exact. The technician recommended at least larger injectors, and a bigger fuel pump. Are there any ways to keep the engine from running lean, either by lowering the boost or getting a fuel pressure regulator? Also, what can I do about the BOV sticking open? Could that cause the engine to run lean? Do supercharged mustangs normally run some sort of engine management? Anything you guys can think of would be appreciated, thanks. |

Honestly I don't think we can make any serious assumptions or decisions without knowing what exactly is done to it. I'm not going to listen to the import shop either.....

Ok, so upon some further research (i.e. looking under the hood, etc) I've determined that it's a Procharger kit. I looked it up online and it looks like the 'tuner' kit comes with injectors and a fuel pump, but I remember my dad mentioned that the kit was new when he got it installed. At any point in time did the kit NOT come with injectors and a fuel pump? I checked the front bumper and saw that there was an intercooler, so I am assuming that the fuel pump and injectors are in there somewhere. I also checked the passenger kick panel to see if there was any sort of engine management, but I didn't see anything other than what looks like the factor computer box, with the cables/wires plugged into it. I mean, there didn't seem to be anything "extra" plugged or bolted onto that area. What would it look like?
Is there another type of engine management that can be "flashed" onto the ECU without any sort of physical box or other indication that something has been done? Again, thanks guys. As far as the blow-off valve being stuck open...do supercharger kits even use blow-off valves? I think what the tech meant was that sometimes when I shift, the RPM's do not go down and hover around 2000rpm, and it seems like the car is still going forward even though I am shifting gears or braking. What could this be caused by? Lastly, it seems like the car bogs...especially in 1st gear. It makes all of 1st gear almost useless unless I really get on the gas...and even then it seems like it's struggling. Does anyone know of any shops that specialize in Mustangs in the Bay Area, CA? Again, thanks. |

sounds like you need to have the car tuned badly. was the car ever retuned after the supercharger was installed?
what color are the injectors on the engine? the prochargers use a bypass valve and that wouldnt be causing the idle to stay up and wouldnt cause a lean condition. all of your problems seem to be tune related. i would seriously suggest you go to a mustang specialist whos tuned a bunch of them and have them tune it. your looking at anywhere from $500-$700 for a retune, also you cn have them do a 4 bank sct flip switch, which gives your 4 tunes, so you can have a street tune, and maybe a race tune for a couple different boost settings. anyways go see someone who can help.
