Exhaust question and tuner question.....dont laugh lol

Ok well I know my way around fox bodys and can do whatever I need to them. But the computerized mod mustangs confuse the hell out of me with their tuners and stuff.

Anyway im about to order a BBK off road X pipe for it. Question is once I put it on its gonna trigger a check engine light because of no cats, but will it run like shit because its compensating for the new air flow or whatever.

Or would you guys suggest I get a tuner before I do anything to the air flow because I also plan on getting a new throttle body and plenum soon too.

It wont run like shit. The Air/Fuel will probally be off alittle. So listen for any pinging. If it pings you'll need a dyno tune because the 2Vs or GTs dont have knock sensors to retard the timing. Id run 93 gas in it to be safe.

stock timing wont put enough timing in to knock.

stock timing peaks high 2x degree's if i remember right, thats not enough to cause detonation troubles.

No need for a tuner unless you plan on getting tuned later on if you go Supercharged or just feel like getting the car tuned. If you don't plan on that, then Mills are the way to go.

americam muscle carries them for a decent price. they will go to the rear o2 sensors. you can either get direct plug ins or ones you splice together.

I'd say get a handheld tuner, I heard people having troubles with MILs going bad after a while. Turn off the rear O2's with an SCT or DiabloSport and be done with them. If you're modding your car further you'll probably want to get a tuner in the near future anyway

yeah, my mills have lasted 3 years so far and i bought mine used too. but some people do have problems with them. but i think they are like 17 bucks at AM so they arent anywhere near as expensive as they use to be. but i agree with Asian, if you got the money and your going to mod your car further then go for the tuner.

new tuners or updated tuners dont have the option to turn off the o2 in the end user adjustablity anymore. a licensed tuner has to turn them off.

not only that depending on where you live, like MA, the new emissions comps can detect if the O2 sensors are shut off. It will come up as an error with the O2 sensors and you wont pass.

The CEL probably won't come on right away. Mine didn't come on for a couple weeks. You can disconnect the battery for a little while and reconnect it again and the CEL will be out for about that long again. I made my own MIL eliminators using instructions off the internet. When I put my o/r midpipe on, you could not buy MIL eliminators. There was something going on where they could not sell them for awhile. I made mine using like $6 worth of parts from Radio Shack. They work perfectly.

Mil eliminators are just a transitor that give the correct impedance to make the computer think its getting a "Good air" reading from the sensor.

A Mid pipe won't affect your ride quality much. Its the front O2 sensors that matter. You have 4 on your car and the front 2 are the ones that decide how the car runs. The second 2 are just making sure the Cats are in place and filtering. They pretty much just want a lower reading than the front ones. Otherwise they don't do really anything. I flat had mine unhooked for a long time.
