Air silencer?

How many of you have removed your air silencer and is their any downside to doing it. What function is it serving? Also, my first winter with my mustang, we had a bit of a ice storm here in virginia, I managed to get my mustang sideways in its parking spot just trying to back it out. Not really efficient, but a lot of fun!

Thanks, I heard it wasn't doing anything. Just bought a K&N drop in filter to put in after the silencer comes off.

That "silencer" helps the air can draw in cooler air and if it were me I would leave it on. Why expose the filter to underhood air at all? I went to a JLT CAI very quick and that is one of the best mods I did. It even places the MAF in the fender for even airflow readings.

Because leaving the small opening of the silencer on is like making the car breath through a straw. I took mine off on my V6 when I had it.

Yeah and take out the screen up by the MAF sensor while you are at it. The car will sound better and breath better too.

If removing that inlet rubber adds 1 whp I would be astonished. The 2v can only flow as much as it's weakest link which are the heads/valves. I added a 75mm BBK TB/Plenum and gained about-nothing.
UDP's-nothing. Just about the same with the exhaust-mid pipe and catback. I would say those 3 added together may have gained 12-15whp at best. Getting the filter and MAF in the fenderwell with the JLT helped for sure.
It will not harm anything to remove it but save it for when it comes time to sell the car. An original is worth more than a moded and mods are not a good investment. Not saying not to mod but to do so wisely and save everything stock.
Good Luck, Mark

I took mine off before I had a CAI & it changed the sound of the car, sounded better & I'm sure I maybe gained (2-3hp) on the top end. But I definitely lost low end torque. So I just put it back on until I got a cold air kit. This might be helpful to you.

if you drive a v6 its not going to give you that much hp.. you may not even feel much of a deifference

Just do it. It takes like ten minutes. If you don't like the result put it back. That takes like 15. Buying a CAI would get rid of all your questions.
