There is a range where both optimum performance as well as minimal wear share similar characteristics. That number lies in the 175-180 degree range, which correspondingly requires a 180 degree thermostat.
Years of research show use of 160 degree thermostats is way too low to be considered for performance or engine longevity. Engine wear increased by DOUBLE at 160, than at 185 degrees.

I have a hypertech 160* in mine. I got mine from performance unlimited here in Newport News, but you can find them on hypertech's site.

Not to mention the fan won't come on until 190 unless you change the settings in the ecc. So the temp still goes to 190. 180 is as low as I will go and only with the fan on settings changed in the ecu to match the thermostat..

Buyer beware! 160* thermos are not doing your engine any good. I have even heard of instances where engines were damaged because the oil did not rach a high enough viscosity to lub. the engine correctly. 180* is as low(atleast in a Mustang) as you should ever go imo! I have ran them all including 160* until I head of all the complications with them. 180*'s are more than sufficient...

Exactly. don't go as low as 160, stay 180 or less like most others have said. I've delt with several speed shops and all of them said no lower than 180 and they've been in the beusiness for years. I actually had one shipped to me and after talking to my speed shop that tuned my car, he told me to send it back and that it wouldn't benefit at all.
For those of you who have one (160) get it changed back to minimum 180 unless yuu want problems in the future.

i've had my slp 160* thermostat for 2 years now and have had no problems. should i change it anyways to 180* to be more safe? in the slp performance pac they give the 160* thermostat so it can't be as bad as everyone says and im proof so far... (crosses fingers)
