Muffler Question

Why is it that so many of you are running flowmasters on your car? Have you seen any dyno proven gains from running them? Or is it more for the sound?

I used to have Magnapacks... Which were much louder than my 40's now.
But a dyno after switching from Magna to flow gave me 4hp more. That may just be a 1/100 chance, but there was a gain from the switch.

Flowmaster mufflers sound sick and r very inexspensive for someone on a budget and can't afford a full exhaust system. I'm runnin stock h-pipe and stock manifolds and my pony sounds pretty good. So For under $100 you can have the tru muscle car sound without breaking the bank. They sound frickin amazing IMO. I didn't kno flows improved hp noticeably tho... Learn somethin new everyday.

They do give a nice rumble.
As far as the hp gains... It mighta just been a freak coincidence. But I've heard other say the same. But who really knows...

Flows are very popular because they were one of the first after market exhaust to get the Mustang sound right. Kind of like the Harley sound, you know a real Harley when you hear it and a motorcycle trying to sound like a Harley. Of course that was in the 90 and up to maybe 2002 IMO. There are plenty of other after market exhaust out there that sound way better than Flows IMO. I have Magnapacks and would never put "blowmasters" on my stang. I'm not a fan of how they sound on the 4.6L at WOT.

I find that very odd that flows would add more HP than a straight through exhaust like Magnapacks. I've never had my car dynoed so I have no idea what I gained. Are sure you didn't add anything else when you add the exhaust?

+1 for Magnapacks. I've heard 4.6L with flos and mags and I like the mags much better. Youtube is your friend

I used to have flows. The only reason I changed them was to get a flow-through type muffler.

ive got flows and have been told that they are not doing me any good performance wise. But at the same time, everytime i go to the track i get MAJOR props on it sounding good. Cams loping, procharger chirping, and flows just turns heads!!! I have also been wanting to get louder though. Would the packs make it louder?

Straight through type mufflers certainly add a lot more rumble, not to mention a lot more power if your boosting.

Hey man, to be honest the gains in hp from one to another is not enough to even consider that as a viable reason for switching.

Its all opinons of different people over sound. I find that most people like flows for the unique sound they have, but switch to other manufacturers becuase flows arent loud enough for their taste.

so IMO people get flows for the unique sound, and other types because they want louder.

Mac, Magnaflow, and slp are all louder than flowmasters from what Ive seen, with slp being the loudest if Im not mistaken, though i feel they sound horrible.

also, it depends on your mid pipe. are going high flow catted? or catless ( o/r )?

and do you want an h pipe ( lower and deep muscle tone)? or an x pipe ( raspy race car sound )?

its all on opinion. I've never seen someone switch exhaust for hp gains unless it was going from stock to aftermarket.

Hope this helps.

yeah bassani is in the top 2 of best sounding! I love their sound. i just want my car louder than what it is. The flows are nice but not loud enough. Are the packs straight through?

Another cat-back not many people know of is S.S.S
Mustang Exhaust - SSS Mustang Cat Back Stainless Steel Systems Exhaust
This is what I have, and I love the sound. Sounds like borla but better and half the price.

When looking into cat backs some people dont consider what is done to the car to try and get the right sound. a ca with more horse power like FI will sound totally different with the same exhaust as one with just bolt ons.
