180 degree thermostat

While I was replacing the intake manifold I was going to go ahead and replace the thermostat for a 180 degree one. Well the intake manifold actually came with a new thermostat, the stock 192 degree one. Not sure of which one to use I called me guy that I have do major work for me. He builds and races dirt cars, drag cars, etc. Anyway I asked him which one to use and he said the 192. He said the 180 wouldn't allow the car to actually get up to full operating temp and that these newer cars are designed to run best at 195-200 degrees for air fuel mixture, ect.

My question to you guys is what do you think? I went ahead and put the 192 in it but it's not hard to swap and I haven't taken the 180 back yet. Opinions?

lol wtf? did you? 90% of the ppl on here will say 180 thermostat is the way to go. I have NEVER heard of the operating temperature for these cars are 200 degrees. All that i have seen is that 160 is too cold.

never said anything about 160. Not too mention I did search and no one has ever talked about any possible adverse affects of a 180. Every thread is just put a 180 in, trust us.

Your builder said to run 192 (stock) and said 180 was too cold. But really it is 160 that is too cold and 180 that is preferred. But to be honest unless you can tune the fans to kick in at 180 anyways it will have no effect and will stay at stock range.

I was just saying in original post that 180 is desired thermostat temp, and 160 is too cold. I know that the thought of 160 didn't cross your mind. You asked for an opinion and i gave it lol. And no i'm not trusting that, no offense.

No disrespect meant or implied. I just never heard anyone really explaining why a 180 is preferred and I'm not one to mod the car just bc someone says it's good. I need to know why. You're explanation on the fans helps for sure. Doesn't seem like the 180 would actually do much if it doesn't kick the fans in sooner unless I'm missing something.

Reps for at least trying to explain and not giving the usual "trust me it's better" answer.

192 is good no reason to go cooler. but if ya do you need a tuner to adjust your fans.

Ya i tried, the post above saying that i should of read before posting just riled me up a bit. Unless fans can be adjusted (through tuner) it wont matter if it is 192 or 180. Generally cooler the engine the better. But that is only effective to a point. 160 is known to be too cold. But 180 is usually the prime. But to be honest 12 degrees from 180 to 192 is controversial and you won't find any facts on the matter, just racers insight.
