Ticking Noise at Idle

I have a 00 GT with Saleen Supercharger Kit. The car has a ticking noise, most noticeably at idle. I can hear it bouncing off the ground from any side of the car at idle, even from the rear. It seems loudest front the front passenger wheel well. The noise increases with speed and disappears by 3k, either because it disappears or engine noise covers it up. When I rev the car and let it drop, the ticking seems to slow to slower than the tick is at idle and then quickly returns to the same rhythm. I cannot hear it from the engine bay.

I have remove each spark plug wire and injector harness individually and heard no changes. I am stumped. I have done some searching and reading with no definitive answer. Please chime in!

I removed the serpentine belt to see if that would further isolate it. No change.

Sure it's not timing chain guides or tensioners? People have been having issues with that.

Well, I don't see how it would be piston slap or rod bearing problems after removing each plug and injector harness without any isolation luck. I think it's an exhaust leak or timing chain tensioner or possibly some valve train wear after 82k miles!? I will try to isolate an exhaust leak, and then move on to pulling the timing covers to check the chain tensioner as well as examine the shims, rockers, etc. over the next few weeks.

These motors aren't a fortune, so if those checks yield nothing I will live with it until it lets go, and then drop another motor in...

I needed my O2 bung welded in, and I went to the exhaust shop. The guy there, who I have went to for years, didn't think it was an exhaust leak, and if it is, it's right off the right side hear at the cylinder head. It's definitely from the right side. It doesn't seem to be getting louder, and it's loudest from under the car.

I talked to the previous owner of this car, and it has been making the same noise with no increase in volume or intensity for several years. I think this is just the loud valvetrain noises of a modular motor, and I am being paranoid. I'll keep an eye on it, but I can't help but think a boosted car would have let go by this time if there was something wrong, and I don't see how slacked timing chains would still be operating at this point.

I had an escort that made noise like that for years, and I beat it to death. I don't remember being as loud, but it also didn't have a full exhaust with no cats...

He checked for exhaust leaks, but I don't think he was super thorough. It might be where the header meets the head. I'll re-torque those and see.

take a long piece of hose and listen around all exhaust gaskets for leaks(like a stethoscope(sp?))

I agree with limited. Find a more specific way of listening. Then if you dont hear leaks im gonna say its the typical ticks these cars have or a timing component giving you trouble.

ticking

i hava an 01 with 100000 it sounds like i have the exact same tick that you have, the car runs and drives mint, only noticable at idle up to about 1800rpm it is loudest from pass side wheelwheel and under the car, mine got much louder after i installed longtubes and o/r x pipe. i think its valve lash but not sure, ive also hears that the seafoam cleaner would clean the topend and help alot but idk,i think i might try it... if youve came up with anything else let me know...
