the internal shift stops on a 3650 suck balls and allow you to easily bend shift forks with a missed gear whereas i have beaten the hell out of a 3650 with a upr blue thunder with adjusted shift stops and had not problem. there is more to a TRUE short shifter than just a shorter handle is all im saying.

Not quite... If you are good at welding, then the welds will be stronger. If you're not the greatest at welding, I guarantee the shifter will break at the welds before the acutual handle breaks. Plus an aftermarket shifter is almost always aluminum, which has to be TIG welded, which is probably the hardest type of welding.

+1 Well said

The strength of the weld depends on the temperature of the weld and the cooling process. Doing a post weld heat treatment really helps the strength of the weld as it allows residual stresses caused by welding to go away. To do a PWHT, either cover the part with insulation after you finish welding it so that it cools as slowly as possible or heat the part up in something and slowly lower the temperature. usually over the course of an hour or two.

Of course, it should be noted that welding on some steels, the carbide phase of the carbon in the steel will be converted to graphite (I think this occurs at about 800F). Some alloys can also be ruined by welding on them or simply getting them too hot.

I have an F-150 which I drove the balls out of for seven years. Now I have a mustang that I drive the balls out of also.
