homemade shifter modifications
So, i wanted a tighter shifter feel and a slightly shorter throw, So i took off the shift boot and all that and saw rubber around metal, that would explain the rubbery feeling, so i took out all that rubber, so its just metal on metal contact.
That helped out quite a bit for a more solid shift. Then, i got the shift arm or lever i guess, and cut it under the threads where the knob goes, about an inch and then welded the threads back on, so i made it about an inch or so shorter, to shorten the throws a tiny bit, Next up is cutting and rewelding on the straight part that is after the initial bend in the shifter arm. For being free, ive fooled people into thinking i have an aftermarket shifter. Am i a ricer? innovative? or just really bored with no money to spend?? who knows. |

I did the same thing before I got my Steeda Tri-Ax. That rubber bushing makes it feel terrible.
Definately not ricer...innovative!!! And bored...and broke

american muscle actually has some replacement bolts that remove the rubber on the shifter.
i wouldnt say its rice. thats basically all a short throw shifter is (with the base modified a little bit also of course). |

true, an aftermarket short shifter is slightly modified, but its not 200 bucks worth of modified. 200 bucks that could go the vortech fund.

Aftermarket short throws do a lot more than shorten the handle. The springs are so much tighter and there is absolutely no play in the handle at all. People sell used STS all the time for $100, definitely worth it over a modified stocker. I made my own shifter handle like you did and though it was awesome until I bolted on my Tri-Ax, then I realized the one I modified was shit.

I've been on the fence with my shifting options. I've never had a problem with the stocker, so I see no need to replace it.
I do, however, see a HUGE problem with how high the sumbitch is. I'd like to cut it a lot shorter- I love the way the S197's shifter sits so low. So, to me, this sounds like a reasonable mod- innovative, if you will. Let us know how it works out. |

Well when your tight on money anything works.
Your not rice. I used to have people give me crap cause I had an ebay ram air intake and not a $300 brand name.

You essentially fabricated a short throw haha, that is pretty clever.
Back when I first got my Mustang, a friend had a $100 no-name short throw in his car and he says it's a big improvement over the stock. I tried it, liked it better than the truck shifter our cars came with, and the next day ordered a Tri-Ax/Rock Crusher setup. There was a MAJOR difference even between his shifter and mine. He tried my setup after I got it installed and broken in and was amazed. 2 months later he got the exact same setup for his car. The centering springs in the Tri-Ax are just more solid than any other shifter I've felt. The MGW is very nice, but I wouldn't like it for every day driving. If you're on the fence about ordering a new shifter, don't think about it, just do it

Did the same thing on old focus while it wasn't like a true after market shifter, it certainly was better than stock.
I haven't torn into mine yet but will in the spring. Did the rubber just come out of did you have to cut it out?

yea its just stuck in between the handle and the shifter, just unbolt the handle and take out the rubber piece.
And to anybody that wondered, its been working really well, yea, its not a tri ax or mgw, bt its dam better than stock. |

You know you can just buy the handles right? I think the tri-ax handle is like $25 or or $30 bucks. Not as good as the complete short throw setup, but it's probably better than making your own handle.

I've actually contemplated this- buying only the handle, shortening it to the height I like, and bolting it on there. This wouldn't be a bad idea...

If you're going to shorten it anyway, you might as well just modify the stocker. What I'm saying is that a 1 piece handle is going to be a lot stronger than a handle that's been hacked up and welded back together.

Or that.
I wanted the handle only so I could take it somewhere to shorten for me. I doubt I'll do it, I don't have the time or money any more. |

you do know that when you weld something, the weld is stronger than the metal itself.

when people think short throw shifter they think it is shorter therefore making the shift shorter which is not true... a short throw shifter adjusts the actual distance that the shifter moves. they also have adjustable stops where the stock ones dont. and as stated above, the springs that push the shifter to nuetral position are much better than stock. and i believe that the upr blue thunder has the hardest spring...

well it is a given though that by making the actual length of the shifter shorter, ur creating shorter throws, simple lever and fulcrum point. And as for shift stops, the 3650 has internal shift stops. but yes, the springs are definetaly stiffer on an aftermarket shifter.
