Axle swap question

So I picked up a rear for my '01 Mustang from a turbo coupe. I need to know if I can swap my 5 lug axles from my 7.5" rear over to the 8.8" rear? Also will the disc brake setup from the turbo coupe work with the 5 lug rotors?

Im confused. Your name says you have a V8 but you have a 7.5" rear? did you swap out a sixxer for the 8?

I'm confused why the OP would have a 7.5 and a V8 too...

But I'm almost positive the axles would not fit the side gears in the 8.8 carrier correctly

Either he must've done a V8 swap or he is just REALLY confused as to what was in his car...

Hahahaha! Absolutely no confusion here, I'll break it down for you:

car: 2001 Ford Mustang
engine: V6 3.8L/auto(factory)
rear: 7.5"
mods: V8 swap in progress, trans swap inprogress, rear swap in progress
V8 is stock for now, will make 450ish rwhp by summer 2010.

Didn't realize my post was so confusing. No I didn't say what V8, don't want any more confusion.

ahh ok, by your name i thought you had a GT. your best bet would be to get a 8.8 out of a 99-04 gt and directly swap it in. you can do a 94-98, but i do believe it will suck the back tires in a little more because the axles are a little shorter

OK, thanks. What do most guys use when doing the 5 lug conversion? I have a set of 4 lug rims I can use for now, but want the 5 lug eventually. I read that some guys use the longer axle from 2 Ranger rears, is that a possibility? Ranger and Explorer rears seem to be in abundance around here.

I was looking for a rear out of a 99-04 but couldn't find one reasonable in price(I'm on a REAL tite budget). I was considering the 94-98 because they were narrower, just couldn't find one either, this would work well because I am planning on running some 17x10.5(maybe wider)rear wheels.

Your right, the SN95 axles are shorter, 1" if I remember correctly.

FYI, a 17x10.5 will fit fine with a 99-04 rear also

just be patient, 8.8 rear ends are plentifull out there, and good prices too. the 99-04 will fit 17x10.5 rims and use a 315/35/17 tire, its the same exact size as the stock 245/45/17 tire height so it wont screw with your speedometer at all.

Ya, patience is not my strong point when it comes to my projects. Should be picking up motor/trans wext week, rear this week, then I still have to pull the v6/auto out. Anybody in eastern PA need a 3.8/auto trans works fine?

turbo coupe rear wouln't work for you, move on & get one from a mustang. axles are a one off & so are the brakes. it will cost you 2-3x what a gt rear will in the end. sorry.

Thats exactly what people needing to do a 5 lug conversion use. Can't remember if its two left or two right ones from a Ranger, but they do it because the rangers axles are different length, and they get the two axles the same length to work with the centered chunck in a Mustang. They will work on a Foxbody, but like said not ours.
