The pats system is a fuel cut off. The car will still crank if the improper key is being used, it will just not fire up. The problem with the dashed lines indicates a problem with your computer. If your dealer loaded a "blank" or corrupted tune then you will get the problem with the dashed lines.

Plug in your programmer and see if it can communicate with your ecu... if not, they loaded a blank tune or the main fuse may be blown to your ecu (its a large, large green 30 amp fuse in the underhood fuse compartment)

I am leaning more toward a problem with the tune than a problem with pats in general...

also- if pats were causing this problem you would still see the mileage on the cluster, not dashed lines.

I agree with baker... hes trying to steal that car! Though by whats listed i would too...

check your fuses. Try and retune the car yourself if you can

I had a similar problem with my 03. I, like a idiot, erased my ECU while messing with my SCT2. Then ford replaced it free of charge. Of course i didnt say i was messing with my SCT2 and erased it.

I think that I was a little unclear in my earlier post. The car will crank if you are using the correct key for the car, but do not have the correct ecu, or original tune.

PATS not only communicates with the ecu, but also a seperate module behind the dash (sometimes in near steering column, sometimes in the cluster, depends on the ford). If both the ecu and the module read incorrect I believe it will not crank... but i promise you it does when you have changed only the ecu

hi,

I have a similar problem with my 2001 Mustang Gt stick. The theft light blinks and odometer shows -----. I took the car to Chapman's ford in Philadelphia today, they tried to connect to the ecu but they couldnt. The problem is i have to fly tomorrow overseas and I want to learn what the problem is. Actually I am new to Philadelphia and I would appreciate if any of you guys give me a contact or address for a service which can fix this type of problem besides the dealers. thank you..

Bad ground. I was having same problems, its either cause ur battery is below cranking voltage or cant seem to hold a charge above cranking voltage, or you just have a bad ground. one of the grounds to check is running from your front driverside wheel up to the driverside motor mount area, its a flat copper braided wire that should be connected from the block to the chassis. it makes perfect sense because your starter is grounded and if the ground is bad, well hey, you got no starter ha!
