01 gt breaking up

hey guys i have a 2001 mustang gt 5 speed. every now and then my car will break up when im getting into the higher rpms. its almost like a boosted car with a boost leak feels, it just starts to cut out real bad. i have no clue what it is. the other day i went to start my car and it would start and then shut right off, i was told that my idle air control valve was going out but i unplugged a injector and reconnected it and got in and hit the gas and it started right up no problem. so im completely confused and any help would be great. they are 2 seperate problems but would like to know if they both fall into the same thing or what the 2 seperate problems are. i also run 87 fuel in my car. i dunno if thats bad to run but was told not to use premium in it. the car only has glasspack mufflers and a cold air intake. thanks

Tune up. Plugs, air filter, fuel filter and yes, a bad o2 will cause problems. But i bet it is actually getting a lean reading.

I think he is referring to a basic tune up, i.e. spark plugs, filters, oil, all the basics for example. You should definitely fix the o2 problem though I do not think that could be the cause of this problem...

Also, what o2 code are you throwing? There a lot of different codes the o2 sensors will throw out there. A new pipe won't do anything for bad o2 sensors either, unless it's your rear sensors and you can turn those off anyways.

3.73 are good all around gear. What kind of plug do you guys run on a stock motor?

If you don't know when it was last, this is a extremely high probability of your problem. And i love my 3:73. Catless H? That will throw more codes if you don't have MIL's.

+1, but HIGHLY doubt it is the o2's. I bet they are actually doing their job saying uh oh im lean, change the fuel filter!

Did you ask this on another thread or someone else? Anyways, any stock plug is fine. I like ngk's personally. And coppers = better spark, plats = longevity. Without boost plats are fine if you aren't a stickler on the best spark, and want to shell out 40 more dollars on plugs.

it wasnt me that asked, but I seen it too and couldnt remember what was said. Getting old sucks !!! I like NGK also, been running them for years. It seems like most threads for the past few days have been on tune up stuff. just got me to thinking that I might need to go ahead and do one as well.

Tune up is NEVER a waste of money. Cheapest hp gain you will get especially if you waited awhile.

you're right. The most overlooked tune up item is the fuel filter. It needs to be changed every 15k miles. At least 15k. I change mine every 3rd oil change.

Im going on my third in 20k miles hehe. And every third oil change is a good way to remember. Some people end up going like 50k+ and wonder why their car is choking in high rpm. Usually the case! And it is cheap.

So op: change fuel filter, plugs, and air filter. Your car will thank you!

I worked at NAPA few years ago.... guy comes in buying all kind of tune up stuff. Comes back few hours later and says his truck has lost power going up hills and did all the tune up stuff and it wasnt better. I asked about the fuel filter. He says " what filter? ". I sold him one and we put it on in the parking lot. He went down the road and you could see the smile when he turned in...
