Timing a 4.6

Can a 4.6 sohc be timed without having to take the heads off? i have already put my heads back on my engine. a friend is supposed to come time it up for me but i was reading on how to do it myself. The only info i got was on modulardepot and the way it says it, you have to have the heads off to find out what position is "safe mode". Can any of you guys point me in the right direction of some more info on timing a sohc motor or tell me how. lol

Look at the front cover. Youll see a stamping that says TDC kinda shaped like a box with an arrow at the bottom end. Its at about the 10-11 o clock position on the front cover. Look at the back edge of the crank pulley and youll see a notch/slot cut in it. Line that notch up with the TDC mark on the front cover. Rotate it 45* counter clock wise and that is "safe mode".

ajm.... are we saying the same thing? Ive never looked at the timing cover. With my timing cover off and heads on.... This is what i did....

Put keyway on crank at 9:00 (all pistons are down in the block)
Put my cam dots at give or take 11:00 on both heads (will have to adjust accordingly)
Laid chains out and dot the ends with fingernail polish
Put one of the chains ends on the crank mark (will be a groove at about 5 or 6:00) and the other end on the dot of the cam gear.

Do the driver side first then the passenger. I had all my cams bolted down and just turned them with a ratchet/socket to where they needed to be to line my marks up. passenger side is slightly more tricky.

I PM'd you too.

Yea, same thing. Just 2 different ways to go about doing it. the tdc then 45* clockwise was just the first that came to mind when I posted.
