FML!!!

I have a 2001 vert GT and last night I noticed that my interior lights were not turning off after I locked my car, so I go back out from the restaurant, unlocked my car and locked it again and the light would not turn off. So I wiggled the cable a little bit that was attached to my rear-view mirror (it has a loose contact and the only problems I would have is no power going to the lights, never the lights not going out.) As I wiggled the cable, it started shorting out and melting the casing. Then my engine started trying to turn over and headlights came on, all without my key in the ignition. I then put my key in the ignition and the car turned over, but the starter motor kept going. So I jumped out of my car and went to disconnect the battery and that's I noticed that my fuse box under the dash was on fire. I put it out and a good portion of my fusebox is melted together. Now my keyless entry does not work and everytime I hook up the battery, my alarm goes off and I cannot turn it off because my remote doesn't work.

I had to get it towed to a shop that specializes in electronics but its kind of a hole-in-the-wall place and I'm kind of nervous of leaving it there. I just hope he doesn't try to pull a fast one on me.

Wonder if you turned the headlight knob to turn on the interior lights and didnt turn it back off? Wouldnt that suck? Or do you know it was being caused by that messed up wire you wiggled? Rather than just randomly wiggling it around and next thing you know all sorts of trouble.

Best of luck to you though, that really sucks.

obiously ur entire fuse box is going to be replaced. my dad had the same problem with his navigator when he put an xm radio in his car. the retards at best buy wired it wrong and the the fuse box fucking got on fire when he turned the car on. did u have any new radios or things installed that required wiring?

I've always had a problem with that wire, I would always have to wiggle it to keep the lights on and one time I detached it to take a look and it started smoking and what not, but this is the first time all that crazy shit happened because of it.

I did install 2 amps, a sub and a capacitor, but that was over a week ago and I did a pretty damn good job. I've been driving around for a week, an average of 30 miles a day without any problems. This is just beyond me.

Mmm, so that's my problem, my other mustang has a short took the car 2 times to get it fixed, one of them didn't had time but still charged me but just 10 bucks, and the other guy said there was no short after taking the car home my interior lights were one I turned the knob but they're were still one, so I just removed the fuse, I will have to take a look at what you said. Its really annoying everyday I had to get a jumpstart from someone or I cant even listen to music 15 min cuz the battery will die, yes I have a sound system but that wasnt the problem, battery is fine too. Good luck.

it could be the alternator? When my mom bought her mustang which was a 2004 the altenator was replaced along with the battery. But it sounds more like a wiring malfunction. i just cant figure out what started the fire if ur sound system and everything checks out

Hmm. Tried to start by itself. Are you sure it's not a Toyota?

That sucks though man. However, I have to ask, if you have had a problem with the mirror wiring smoking before, why did you ever hook it back up?

Did you really expect everything to be working with the fuse box melted together? I don't know why you would even hook the battery up at this point unless you like fires.

replace all burnt wiring and go from there. strange it would short the wire to the point of melting/catching on fire, thats what fuses are for.

you will find where that wire melted in loom are also the wires that control the circuits that where freaking out

Man that's crazy lol sorry to hear that you had such a series of unfortunate events op. The closest thing I've ever heard of something like that happening was when my friend crossed the cables when jumping her car.
