block question(s)

Hi im new here. i have a 99 gt and turns out i have a rod knock. i was origanally going to buy a forged shortblock but have recently been deciding against spending that much money when i dont plan on doing too many mods to this car its more of a daily driver. So im thinking about taking the block out of a wrecked car with low miles. has anyone ever done this? are all the 4.6 2v blocks interchangable? thanks for any help

i havent done it but i know for the most part that all the blocks are interchangable the only difference in the 4.6 2v years are the heads. they had non pi heads and pi head (pi pefromance improved heads) i think it start in 99 with the pi heads but everything else should swap over.

You have a windsor block in your 99, late 01-04 are romeo blocks, not much difference besides the fact of the windsor being a bit tougher, having a 8 bolt flywheel, and 13 bolt valve covers. The romeo has an 6 bolt flywheel and 11 bolt valve cover I believe. Where are you located? I have a romeo block I could let you have and I'll sell the top end for the infamous "PI" swap lol.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure everything is interchangable.

the only thing is to make sure you get the right valve covers for the heads you use i would go with a romeo block you can find parts easier b/c they made more of them and i believe the romeo black has more iron in the block

There's a company advertising brand new aluminator blocks in GRM for $650. Seemed like a freakin' STEAL to me.

I have an 2002 GT and according to my VIN it's a windsor block.

oh well, for some reason I read something about 8position in vin and engine. Oh yeah found it was looking for replacement flywheel and clutch as mine is going. In the footnotes on FRPP site it reads

"4.6L engines may have 6 or 8 bolts to attach to the crankshaft. Check the engine code before ordering. Romeo built engines have 6 bolts and Windsor built engines have 8 bolts. All Cobra engines have 8 bolts. The 8th character in the VIN is (X) for Windsor engine plant or (W) for Romeo engine plant.

pretty easy to figure out, who many bolts did you end up having & whats the vin.

I'm almost 100% certain that all 2002s came with Romeos, along with six-bolt flywheels.

I don't know how my vin shows an X engine type but made in Michigan. I know Romeos were made in Michigan, as opposed to Windsors in Ontario. I'll check the cam covers tomorrow during the day and see if it's 11 or 14bolts.

I would hope this is the case and that the FRPP site is wrong about the W and X engine types. But now I'm not sure what I have as far as engine type.
