I laugh when people say "he's an all round mechanic" doesn't mean he knows shit. There are cars pushing over 400HP FI with stock PI intake, yeah the cheap plastic intake your mechanic said is worthless, listen to some of these guys on here some of them know what they are talking about and trying to help you, my friend had a typhoon intake in his 02 Gt, man they look nice all polished, but he could never get the car to idle right. Finally he just sold it for a 150 and the guy who bought it spent another 300 to have it milled straight and ported and polished. But the guy who bought it has a fully built two valve with a pro charger.

I run a ported tyhpoon intake that I got a decent deal on, and havent had any problems. Its gotta be flowing more because I lost about 2psi of boost but still ran faster at the track.

Typhoons are not bad if you want to spend a little extra and clean them up. If I had the money I would of got that intake also.

It's been proved that you will lose hp with the TF unless you plan to rev over 7000rpm.

Ford Racing M-9424-P46 - Ford Racing 4.6L Performance Improvement Intake Manifolds - Overview - SummitRacing.com

$190<$300

The problem is the plastic thermostat housing! Not the intake itself, this solves both of your problems: cost and function with an aluminum thermo housing.
