strange as hell

on a 175 mile trip, my car used 6.7 gallons
right at 26 mpg, most of the time doin 80mph

what i find strange about that is my car idles like hell. it surges. from time to time stalls on its own. sputters and spits. and runs fairly rich. every tune up item is up to date on the car
26 mpg is really good, not complainin just strikes me as really odd. ive done this experiment several times, and the results repeat.
Car is stock cept exhaust. thats it

ford's secret hybrid.... ? who knows. i wouldn't complain about 26mpg but maybe a tune would help with the sputtering and stalling. is it an auto or 5 speed? maybe disconnect your battery let it sit and reconnect it. might help with the idle and such. don't know though.

Mods? Tunes?

Sounds to me like a tuning issue. No CEL?

Hmm...are you sure the only codes being thrown are from the H pipe? As in, have you pulled the codes recently?

Might ought to try and do what Stangpride suggested with the battery. Our PCMs, when disconnected from the battery, will reset- you'll still have your tune- but it will reset all the parameters that are adjusted on the fly. Disconnect your battery for a few minutes, re-connect, and start it up and let it learn the idle and fuel characteristics.

Can't do much harm.

I don't know how he's running rich and getting that kind of fuel mileage...

My personal best was 29.X mpg @ 75 mph on a stock tune and stock gears.

yea i wouldn't be asking why i got 26mpg. i would kind of not talk about that so the car wont hear you and change tomorrow. i would be getting to the stalling and cutting out issue.

just me...

On the start my car doesn't like to start up the first time some times I am guessing because of not enough back pressure at start???? but I don't have your issues. Definatly get a good tune going on!

Best I ever got was 28 and that was on 93 octane on the way back from texas from a BP, the worst I ever had was some where down in the 8 - 10 range when I was pissed one day and spent all day racing up and down an abandoned local highway! (only used by farmers now! its LONG FLAT and STRAIGHT!
