If your foot was down on the clutch all the way, then no, it's not normal.

You weren't on a hill were you?

or wait, I reread, so your foot was off the clutch and you were pushing the shifter into first? I'm surprised you didn't hear a grinding noise, but it's normal since the synchros were just matching the speeds of the dog tooth gears before fully engaging the gear. Try not to do it too much since it's hard on the synchros.

This is what I say. Perfectly normal.
