mach 1 heads are the same as like 99/01 cobra heads I'm pretty sure. Basically you have to get the whole top end from a mach/cobra for it to work

Not necessarily. If you can source out a bunch of used stuff for a decent price then it's cheaper to piece something together. But you have to know your stuff and know EVERYTHING that you need. Plus it takes more time.

I guess you could piece one together over time and not be out of pocket any LARGE expense at one time. In that regard it might be better.

The deal is I got a shortblock out of a 2002 Crown Vic for $75.
I am going to build it into a decent engine for my 99 GT over the course of a year or so on an engine stand. I'd like it to still be streetable, stay n/a, but still make in the 300-350ish amount in hp. One day, I may go crazy with the engine (maybe pull my current 4.6 and have some real fun with another Mustang) but my 99 has 130,000 miles on it and the car has a lot of importance to me and I'd like to keep this car. I want to build a good, reliable, strong engine that if it had to be a daily driver it could be (I don't plan on it though) but it will still get people's attention. I was offered a set of Mach 1 heads. I've been looking at Trickflow but they sort of defeat my purpose. I guess what I'm asking is would the Mach 1's be my best bet or is there another alternative? |

You can definitely make that much power with the TFS heads N/A with a decent set of cams, but it will cost a pretty penny. It would be worlds easier than embarking on piecing together a 4v swap......
Why do the TFS heads defeat your purposes? |

agreed, and if I had the opportunity to go 4v I definitely would. It's just a much more involved swap.

99/01 heads are not the same as the 03/04 but they are very close. With all bolt-ons minus LTs I made 300rwhp. If you swap the 03/04 intake cams out with 96-01 4V intake cams with LTs you'll be in the 320-335rwhp range. Or you could redo the whole valvetrain with an aftermarket set of cams and be in the 370rwhp range depending on what cams you choose.

I've already got the 2v block with no heads. I'm building this block from scratch and dropping it into my 1999 GT

If you're gonna do 4v heads, why would you saddle them with a crank that can't handle the rpm that makes 4v heads awesome? You're also going to create the heaviest possible iteration of an N/A 4.6L. It's not gonna be that much more expensive to find an aluminum Cobra block, which will net you a forged crank, making up for the extra weight of the heads.
Unless you can get the 4v heads for REALLY cheap, you'll be better off with the trick flows.
