Wet Sanded Headlights

So I was going to buy new headlights bc mine looked real bad. Yesterday I got bored and decided to wet sand them and then try to buff them out...

to start my headlights were all scratched up, had what looked like clear coat peeling off of the corners real bad and they were a little hazy.

after using 1000, 1200 then 1500 grit sandpaper and then a polishing compound i could not believe how much better they looked.... I had deep scratches that came right out!!

SOOOO glad I tried this CHEAP fix before I spent tons on new ones... think I might try my fogs today

I tried that before, unfortunately within a month or so it'll come back worse than before. I ponied up and bought new ones after the 2nd time I spent all that time on them.

Yeah, I thought about having mine clearcoated to protect them after I wetsanded them, but given the cost of a good clearcoat, new headlights didn't seem to be such a bad deal. They did look good for a little while though, it just sucks that it's so much work.

I was told (so I don't know the validity of the info) that the headlights have a UV protection on them from the factory, and once you wetsand them, you remove that and then the sun beats them down very quickly after that.

I did that to mine and they looked great. Then I went to Autozone, bought some cheap $5 rattle can clear coat, and sprayed the headlights. In the year I had my car, they continued to look as good as day one. Went through a summer and the salt of the winter.

Back when i had my notchback, the plastic covering in front of the gauge cluster was what looked to be fogged up but it ended up being the plastic itself... i used PLASTIC X, and everything looked great afterward.. great product.

yea, you gotta clear them. I put a couple coats of clear, wetsanded couple more coats wetsanded. then hit it with some polishing compound and finished with a couple nice coats of wax. My lights have been looking great for the year or so Its been done.
