ticking noise

i just rebuilt the 4.6 in my 99 GT, fired it up and right away noticed a ticking sound. it sounds like its coming from the top of the motor. i dont think the problem is in the heads because they are brand new factory ford heads. both timing chains, tensioners, and guides have been replaced with new ones. i've heard that a bad injector will make a ticking sound. how can i check the injectors? any other suggestions?

Headers make a ticking sound and Fords are bad about getting them. I got some new shorties for right around 300$. Your GT will run better, LT's are harder to install, but it will be better if you like the deeper sounds...

Might be a spark plug? Check to see if they are all tight.

If they are brand new, yes around the gaskets, see if any of the bolts are loose... Stock manifolds tend to crack and break right where the piping into the weld. Metal heating, cooling, heating, cooling, will eventaully wear out. It expands and shrinks in other words.
Does the ticking stop when your car warms up?

Take a peice of hose about 3 ft long, and put on end to your ear and move the other aroung where you think the leak is coming from. It will be obvious when you find it. If you still are not sure, take it to a local muffler shop and have they will check it out for free. I would guess it to be your header gasket, if thats the case when you replace it, make sure to use a copper, or some sort of metal gasket. While your doing that, you should probally order a set of Stage 8 locking bolts to prevent the bolts from ever coming loose they are about $50.

Good Luck

Easy, get a video man. There are so many ticks, clicks, and other strange noises that a motor can make, trying to diagnose is much easier if we could hear the problem ourselves.

Exhaust leak without a doubt... Your manifold is cracked. A small crack though, metal expands when heated and shrinks when cold. When your header heats up the metal expands and almost closes the crack (thats why you still hear the faint tick). You need to get them fixed, they only get worse. Metal expands and contracts so much then its very flemzy. I'd recommend looking around for headers on AM. I got mine for under 300. LT's would benefit you the most though...
Drivers side is VERY easy to take off, only thing you have in your way is the tranny dipstick...

i actually found the problem to be a bad fuel injector..i checked all 8 with an ohm meter after finding out they were supposed to read 10 to 18 ohms and one of them were bad..replaced it, and now the tick is gone...thanks to all who responded

I'm sure you've checked this but do you have enough oil / the right oil in it? ticking can also be caused by your valves not having oil on them.
