Changing Rear End Oil
Sorry, I couldn't post this in the drivetrain section... so if any of the other year model guru's want to step in here you are very welcomed. I got my 4.10's put in a few months ago and have already racked up 1,000 miles on it!
I know I know, but i've heard you should change your gear oil about 500 miles after you did a swap. Is this true, and have i possibly damaged anything waiting this long?

You could change the oil if you want, shouldn't have problems if it was all put in right. Changing oil in the 8.8 is a pain in the ass with a factory cover, so if you insist, get an aftermarket one that has a fill port on the back.

youll be fine if you dont change it.....if it was required to change the fluid xxx miles after installing new gears how come when your car rolled off the lot it didnt have a maint schedule that requires you to get the rear fluid changed 500 miles after.

Never heard of this with diff fluid, if the level is right and the additive was put in you should be fine man no need to change brand new fluid. I have heard of this on an engine before but never a rear.

^ this used to be talked about a lot about a year ago or so...Luckily it finally died down.
The people that actually believe this needs to be done have a theory that when your new gears "break in" in the first 500 miles theyll shave metal...enough metal to contaminate your fluid to the point where if you dont change the the fluid at 500 miles youll have premature rear end failure. |

Bad install be it pinion depth, backlash, or preload. Usually its the pinion depth that causes it though....From what ive seen.
Yes it will/can harm the gears. |
