Vacuum leak test

So ive tried water, didnt change the idle because its so shitty i cant tell where the hole is, im pretty sure i have a vacuum leak. is there a home made smoke machine way to do this like dry ice or 'fog juice' or what? because the ether or tb cleaner doesnt work.

It will change the idle with carb cleaner if you hit the leak. Water only works if it is an exit (pressurized which yours isnt). I have tried a home made smoke machine and all it did was make a mess. A real smoke machine is actually pressurized to put it throughout the system.

yeah i know! like $1500 atleast.
even the going shop rate at $134 an hour is expensive for a smoke test.

Thats nuts. Yea my car had a small leak when I was getting tuned, my tuner Mike Dez hooked up the smoke machine, it was coming from the TB, I put the gasket on wrong (FML)

But yea, hit it with starter fluid or carb cleaner

Yeah its expensive. I looked for a long time. Buy a few cans of carb cleaner is the only realistic way to find it. Replace questionable hoses/plugs. If you can't find it, you might not have one . Unless it is idling so bad you can't tell lol. But if that was the case it would be loud enough to hear. Have you tried using a hose and plugging one ear? To get a direction of where the sound is coming from. A big leak would be noticeable, and a small one would whistle. Medium one would jump when hit with carb cleaner instantly. So you have a few options.

I usually look with a hose to my ear and try to narrow it down, then spray that area's joints/plugs/hoses/nipples.

The gasket goes on so theres like a slit that matches up with the TB, and I was rushing cause I just did a plug change and wanted to get it done. Stupid mistake.

Some cams can drop it quite far. What cams are you running? Check the rubber elbow for the breather on the driver side valve cover for cracks. Check the hard red plastic hoses for damage as well.

what if i have a valve cover gasket leak, would this cause it too or is this strictly a tb/plenum/intake/vacuum hose problem?

Yes valve cover leak will cause this. Since they are directly connected to the intake after the MAF.

And cams beyond stage 2's will idle that low. I know yours a custom but just a comparison. My stage 2's idle that low. 14-15 ideally at 770 rpm.
