still trying to diagnose motor failure

in an earlier thread i posted how my car randomly let go while just driving eaisly around town and I thought the engine was gone becasue it did not sound good at aLL.. well i've decided on swapping motors as it was in my plans anyways but i'd still like to get this one fixed!

i've pulled the valve covers. all is well on driver side. on passenger side the roller rocker closest to the firewall was off of the spring down in the head. so i figured that was my problem! well the cam happened to be in the perfect position to slide the rocker right back on no problem, it wasn't bent or scratched or anything all looked fine. put the valve covers back on hooked everything up, the engine barely fired and immedaltey died without even giving a hint to try.

pulled the passenger side and again the same rocker was thrown, down in the head......

whats the problem??? Acmillr suggested I may have tightned down the girdles a bit much causing some interferene but then again the car has been running beautifully for 650+ miles until just now... please help me out i'd like to get it running before i lift the engine out of her!

Latest mod: comp 262 cams

btw: all valves look to be as they should be... i'm not the most skilled mechanic so i'm not sure what exactly I should be looking for but looking at the driver side, then looking at the pass. side everything looks fine! and it's only stage I comp cams, i did not update valve springs as they wen're required (not even for stage II) . my friend has the exact cams in his 2v and he's been good for 35k miles on stock springs! i'll post a pic of exactly how it looks when i removed the valve cover in a few min

this is exactly how it was when i removed the pass. side valve cover. as you can see the rocker farthest to the left was thrown and you can barely see it at the bottom of the picture. the valve and spring still seems to be in ok order... also the roller rocker itself is not damaged at all

and remember the cam is in perfect position for me to slip the rocker back in which i did however as soon as i turned the ignition it was immediately thrown I could hear it...

When you said you were able to slide the rocker back on with no problem, did you have to loosen anything to get it in? I'm not the sharpest tool when it comes to the way these cams and valve trains are set up, but it just doesn't seem right that you could squeeze a lifter back into place while everything was tightened down...

yep that's it.

i was suprised as well to find that i could just slide it in underneath the camlobe but it is normal. some of them are open and some of them are closed. so some of them are pretty loose and some of them are very tight.. i know this is normal because thats how i got all 16 rockers back on after putting the new cams in.

I put all of them on that I could slip underneath the cam, then turned the crank pulley spinning the cams until i found the position where i could slip the remaining rockers in. it just doesn't make sense that it's immediately throwing the rocker apon ignition. of course it has only done it once, but i imagine if i put it back on again and try a 2nd time it'll do the same thing

You've got a bad lifter/lash adjuster. Pull that lifter out and see how easy it is to depress. If it is collapsed, it will not put adequate pressure on the follower to retain position.
Just my educated guess..........

And that's a direct cut-n-paste out of Chilton's repair manual.

lash seems to be fine nothing wrong with it visually, it pulled right out and falls right back in to the same depth as all the others. im guessing it should be hard to press back in?? it does kind of just fall in by itself is there something wrong here?

OK, you're missing the point.

When you have the lash adjuster out of the head, hold it in between your fingers and dpress the pin that sticks out of the top of it.........
