Removing Converters...Merely curious

Before I get slammed for the question I want to reitterate IM JUST CURIOUS Not planning on trying this

I've been dealing with cars for years with my family being filled with ridiculously skilled mechanics (two of my uncles run an exhaust shop here in virginia).

When I did my V8 swap in my stang I was really suprised to see that the car I pulled everything out of, had 6 converters

I've known plenty of people with F body camaros and they all hold 2 underneath

General conception is remove Cats=make power to some but I've seen it backfire more than once (my ex's dad had 97 nPI that he cut the converters off of and it killed it I swear even with the oxy's put in the pipes).

Im sure that a 4.6 probably was dead set on all 6 but Im curious, if you were to have your computer burned (removing the oxygen sensors) would it gain power then? Just curious to whether someone has seen this been done

As long as you have your front o2's turned off you'll be fine. Thats probably what was wrong with the other car you mentioned. I don't think you'll see much gain with removing them, but there will definitely be a louder sound output.

Yep, my 99 had 6 also. And with an offroad midpipe you will notice a difference.

Holy crap, 6 converters?

I didn't really notice any gain on mine when I went to an O/r pipe, but that may be because I had only 2 cats to start with.

The car I pulled everything out of had 6, it was a 97, 01 engine with pre COP timing cover and coils placed on it

I've read that you will kill all the low end power (and it did on my ex's dads). There were 4 oxy's on it

I live in Floyd Virginia, bout an hour from Roanoke and 30 mins from Christiansburg/Blacksburg

Mine had 0 when i bought it. Sounds like a freaking beast. I haven't put it on a lift yet to see what muflers i actually have but they kind of look like 3inch flowmasters and they turn down at about the back seat.

A downside, I can't really talk on the phone while accelerating if the windows are down and everyone knows when i show up to work late.

I know the sound would be great but I fear a loss in low end power. If the computer was reprogrammed I would assume that wouldn't be an issue. My uncle's garage can send it off and have it done cheap but you have wait two weeks to have it done

I may just ride it out for a while and when I repaint it I may do it then. Maybe some Roush Side Pipes too

i used to have mine removed. There was no loss in power at all. And it sounded pretty descent! I had them removed from my 95 5.0 and it sounded damn good!

As far as killing low end power, the loss is minimal at best IMO. You will lose a hair of low end grunt but not hardly anything at all. And the gain up top in the RPM range and in sound alone will more than make up for it! And it will run stronger with furture mods!

No more prochamber? I know those don't have cats right?

I had mine cut off and kept them but I fear if I ever needed them back that my exhaust guy won't be able to put em back in or it will be a time when I dont have the money to do so.

I wish it all just bolted together. much easier for changing out for emissions.

This was on your 5.0 only or have you done it to your 4.6 as well?

i did it to my 4.6 when i got it. It sounded pretty descent. Take the way your car sounds now and just multiply it by 2 or so. Just makes it a lil louder. But when i started doing all my modding, i am now running the prochamber, long tubes, flows.

But yeah, i definitely would say go for it. I was glad i did it. It was the FIRST thing i did to my mustang when i got it.
