Small Body Work Re Clearing

well one of the workers here at work sratched my LT quarter panel with the rear bumper on one of the utilit trucks and i dont know if he is going to pay for the damages i can remove the paint that was left on top of the clear coat with my PC 7424 and some M105 that i have...but then the clear coat was completely scraped off on a small area would i be able to wet sand it and then re clear that area then wet sand it again and polish it with fine polish would this work or will i be able to notice the area that was repaired just asking to seeif its worth repairing by myself or just taking it in because its going to run me $325.00 i want it to look go not crappy so before i attempt anything i wanted to ask everyones thoughts ill post a pic later...my main concern is that its the clear coat its going to start to peel now that its exposed

As long as just the clear was scraped off you can sand and re-clear that one spot, nothing wrong with that. I'd make that guy pay for it to be taken to a shop though

hell naw man. Im going to tell you straight up... dont try it. Its not "that easy" to blend a panel like that. Alot of pro painters cant even blend with a blending agent and make it so that you CAN NOT TELL!

Trust me... you will hate yourself for doing it and then the shop is going to charge more to redo it to make it right. If for some reason you are in the need to try this yourself, clear the entire panel.

Im not trying to doubt you or your talents. Just trying to save you some time and money. Its not as easy as just clear it and water sand it out and buff that spot in the quarter. You will need to melt it in with a blending agent and so forth. Its not easy and like i said, some pro painters at shop wont even attempt a blend like that.

good decision man.. I PROMISE! Ive seen alot of shops "try" to spot it like that and it just ends up looking like hell. They try to correct it by sanding it out and buffing but it ends up leaving a ring because they did a shitty job of carrying out their scuffing and a shitty job of trying to melt it in with the blending agent. Then on top of that, the blending agent is VERY thin so its SOOO easy to make it run, and to sum it up.... there is going to be a mess!

Ill say this... I have done it but if i can in ANY WAY throw it to my dad to do, i will! even the shop you take it to will probably clear the entire panel. Their are certain times and areas to blend and in the middle of the quarter is just not one of them. Corners of a front bumper are usually the main areas that are blended. A big flat panel does NOT need to be blended on. Just clear the entire panel.

You can. But there are certain times, areas, and colors that it should be done on. Center of a panel is not where a blend needs to be done. Then if the car is black... Good luck. I GUARANTEE i could walk up and tell you exactly where they made a blend if it was black/dark color and/or in the middle of a large panel (door, quarter)

And we too do them all the time, but there are times to do it. You can end up creating more work for yourself by sanding/buffing a large panel when you can just finish out clearing the panel and be done with it and have a MUCH cleaner job

look at my sig pic..... pretend i have a big scrape right below the ambers on my cobra bumper. I wouldnt want to clear the entire bumper as that is too much material for nothing. I would fix my area where the scrape is and scuff to about the inside of my fog hole from top to bottom of bumper.

Then i would put my silver base where i made the repair. Then clear the area until about the outside of the fog hole from top to bottom of bumper. Then spray/mist the blending agent from edge of clear to where my scuffing ended. This melts/thins it out so that the clear and previous clear melts in together as one. Then after it dried, do my sanding and buffing to clean it up.

Of course there are small things but i just wanted to give you an idea with an example to explain how its done. Now, i wouldnt do that on my hood because the blend area would be so large and i would want a nicer job since the hood is a MAIN focus point.

Did this help at all?

*kicks baker in the crotch*

JK Baker. I've never done spot repairs like this myself. The only stuff I've done is complete paint jobs and panel re-sprays so I didn't know the ins and outs of all the blending agents and stuff like that.
Thanks for schooling us

Not the grammar, just the punctuation.
