chatter on start up

My engine seems to chatter on first start for about 2 to 3 seconds, then quietes down to a light tick.. then after its warm its fairly quiet. Half a year ago it would do this once in a while(mostly in the morning after sitting all night), now it seems to chatter on start up 70% of the time cold or hot. I tried 5w30 oil and that seemed to make it slightly worse so im now back to using 5w20 again.

Thoughts? Im not sure if its something I should really worry about or not..

Maybe it's the lash adjusters? Or timing chain guides. How many miles are on the motor and have you tried to locate where the noise is coming from?

Use a motorcraft oil filter. It keeps the oil were it belongs longer than most other filters. Other filters will bleed down back into the filter and pump.

There is a huge thread about the modular clatter on startup on the truck forum I'm a member on.

Youtube distorted the quality a tad.. But you can hear hte noise at 11 to 12 seconds in

Its been a lot worse than this at times. And yet once in awhile it doesnt do it at all..

def lash adjusters dude. you ever taken one out before? you could buy all new ones or take them out and bleed/clean them like i did.. once they were squished all the way down in a vice i put the little red tube that comes with the b12 chemtool spray right on the hole and sprayed it while letting the vice out.. let the lifter sit for about 2 min and did it again.. i had about 7 pretty stuck lash adjusters and this freed them up pretty good

if they are collapsed then you wont have the propper preload on the follower and it can get ejected out from underneath the cam. also.. its going to cause the valve not to open as far as it should and hurt performance.
