longtube header install; while I'm in there...
While I'm tearing away to install the longtube headers (correction, while I'm paying a friend of the family who has worked at a ford dealership throughout the 90s to install longtube headers) is there anything that I should have him do at the same time that would otherwise be a pain in the ass to access or do on my own?
downloaded instructions from Mac for him and it seems like there's a lot of stuff he'll be removing to be able to install the new headers. just curious if you guys suggest I have him replace some parts that may be wearing down or do any maintenance while you're in there? kind of like while you're doing a timing belt, might as well do the water-pump sorta-thing. thanks very much. (before I get shit on for it; yeah I know, I'm paying someone to do it. but i'll be there the whole time, he has a garage with a lift, full air tools, etc. he has his own garage/business but we're doing this on a weekend and he said he'll need an extra set of hands for some parts of the install )

When I did mine I put in maximum motor sports solid motor mounts and energy suspension tranny mounts.
U have to drop the K member which is the entire front suspension. So u could replace rotors, brake pads, new bushings for the steering column. That's all I can think of hah

Alright, thanks fellas. If you think of any more, let me know I'll have him check everything you mention.
Getting this done in 3 weeks when he's got the time, backed up in shop now. He works at Hummer dealership now, and has his garage with the lift for side-jobs. Says he still knows Fords from the 90s into the 2000s inside and out, said the longtube install will take a while, but he is definitely able to do it. Shweet! Oh btw, going with Mac ceramic long-tubes ( part TF9603 )and the Mac offroad H-pipe made for their LT headers ( part TF9699 ). Yeah i'm weird, like the exhaust to be brand-matching lol Last edited by thork; May 19th, 2010 at 09:55 AM. |

When I did mine I changed my starter, just easier to do while you got everything apart underneath.

Not a bad idea Nasty. There is one starter bolt that's a bitch to get out when everything is together

only thing I can think of is motor mounts. If the starter is still working fine, might as well leave it. It isnt that hard to get to the bolts. other than that there really isnt anything else. get a good set of copper gaskets and locking header bolts for the headers. dont use what comes with the headers.

Pitt you know you're going to have to go back in and tighten them up after they are heat cycled a few times right?

Alright thanks for the tips!
Also... little confused though, I think I don't need gaskets....? "MAC’s True Fit collectors eliminate gaskets, which are prone to leak. Headers retain emissions controls and come with threaded flanges, machined steel studs and self-locking flange nuts." should I still get the Stage 8 header bolts? thanks! |

you need gaskets where the headers meet the heads.
