Engine wont stay running and knocking on driver side???

Today while driving my car on the highway around 60 mph the engine cut out on me and died... no check engine light and car was not overheating....strange.... After the car died I pushed the car to the side of the road and opened the hood and there was smoke coming out my intake filter. I then checked the gauges again and coolant and no check engine light. The engine would crank but would not start.... I had my diablo in the trunk so I ran the diagnostics and No trouble codes. After about 30 mins of sitting on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck I tried starting the car again and the car barely started and then died. After cranking on it a few more times and giving the car gas it started again and died. I tried again and gave the car some gas and the knocking began so I let off the gas and it stalled out and died again... I got the car towed to my house and pulled the driver side valve cover to see if i could find the prob.....but I cannot find the exact locating of the knocking noise.... I tried cranking the car over again with the valve cover off and it appears that the knocking dosent occur until the engine starts to fire......but the sound is def. coming from the driver side head!!! Has anyone had this prob. before? Does anyone have any suggestions??? Ive also put that 108 octane booster crap in the gas tank on the previous 3 fill ups ( not this tank) even though i didnt have a prob with this when i did it... Im prob. gonna get it towed to JPC this week if I cant figure it out..
My car only has bolt ons: Diablo tune, K&N intake, performance products throttle body, throttle body spacer, plenum, and intake manifold, underdrive pulleys, 3.73 gears, aluminum driveshaft, flowmaster cat back, steeda tri-Ax, and I run 93 gas (mileage 76,000)Engine wont stay running and knocking on driver side???

Just a thought, but in my experience, by your description it sounds almost like a valve is stuck closed? If you could have somone crank the engine while inspecting the valvesprings for movement, then do the same with the spark plugs remove. Might be a stretch but you gotta start somewhere

Thanks FoxHoss for the recommendation. Today I inspected the valve springs the best i could and they seem to all be working properly. I cranked the engine with all coils unpluged and everything appeared to be working fine. Then I connected the coils and took a short video of the car attempting to stay running. I didn't want to start it again but i thought this might help if i post it. (The car will not start or continue to run unless i give it a good amount of gas and hold it).
Is it possible that timing slipped on just this head?? Timing chain and tensioners apear to be fine as well.. Any more suggestions before I take it to the shop??? Thanks, Ryan

yikes! well good job on finding the failure. now just to find what caused it, and what to do about fixing it. hopefully with some upgrades, if the budget will allow it that is.

On a side note, which i know you dont want to hear. but if there is no compression and the rockers are broken off, cross your fingers that the valves didnt drop :/

It appears that my timing chain tensioner failed and caused this mess im in..The tensioner broke into 3 pieces.....I pulled the passenger head off and all the valves have marks on them... The pistons appear to be fine, there are only a few small scratches on the top and all cylinders are holding coolant still.
I really dont have the money to spend but it looks like im getting a credit card now and while Im this far I guess ill just pull both heads and drop them off at a machine shop and upgrade the cams and get the heads redone.. Any suggestions on what type of cams I should get?? This is my daily driver so I dont want to overdo it and kill my gas mileage. Next year I plan to supercharge the car as well. Thanks

Wish I had a cool story to tell you guys but this car hasn't even been to the track since I owned it. However, I did run it hard a few times 2 weeks ago at the ocean city car show. It just died on me while crusing at 60 mph in 5th gear on the highway.

Any recommendations on cams?? Do you think i should just get the heads rebuilt ported and polished?

Quick 99 Thanks for the info. I may go with the Stage 2 PI heads and cams combo package from the Modularheadshop - MHS you recommended. Does anyone have this setup on their motor? And what kind of gains should I expect?

Hey Guys I now have the engine pulled waiting for some heads. Also nitced my motor mounts were broke and Checked my clutch and found thats its on its last leg. Anyone have any recommendations on a performance clutch??? I was looking around on these forms and seems that centerforce is higly recommended! What do you think about the centerforce DF800075? Centerforce DF800075 - Centerforce Dual Friction Clutches - Overview - SummitRacing.com Also can I use my stock flywheel with this clutch or any other performance clutch? I hope I can, my budget is getting really tight...
