Turboing mustang
well im new to mustangs and will be purchasing a 99-04 stang. I am horrible with forums and finding stuff. Having said this i am under the beleif that i can run just shy of 500rwhp and be fine. That is my first question is that ok. Second i wanna do cams as well while i have the car apart. for mustangs what would be best to run with a turbo system. And second is Pony Down turbo kits any good they are reasonably priced and seem good.
Im not knew to modifying cars i have 93 240sx that is built and an sti i drive everyday with light modification. Ive had a couple talons as well. thanks for helpin out if you can |

I would stay at or under 450 rwhp. Some people clear that but that's where most issues come up with the factory internals.
Check out the on3performance turbo kits too, from what I have seen most people have been fairly happy with them and they are pretty cheap. |

450 rwhp is the same limit most of the time. When you install a turbo you dont have to take anythin apart.

You don't need cams. The turbo will be plenty to max out your stock shortblock. Pony Down and On3 are two of the cheaper quality turbo kits, therefore they don't cost as much as a quality system. You will need to modify/fabricate them to make them fit properly. They are not a simple bolt up and will require modification. For a quality kit look to Hellion. Two local guys have the On3 kit and it was definitely no walk in the park for the two shops that did the install.

like eveyone else said...the internals might give you problems, but for me being at 450 or so it was my DS and tranny...if i was you i would get a different tranny and stronger driveline, 31 spline axels....

I would agree the Hellion kit is a much better quality kit and comes with everything you need. On3 Performance kit is a good budget build kit, but it doesn't come with the front suspension you need to make the turbo fit, so you have to buy that separate. I would not recommend cams if you are going to run a turbo kit on a stock engine. You will definitely push the integrity of the stock internals.

A short block can range from a couple thousand to as much as you want to spend on it depending on parts.

You could get a used 03/04 cobra shortblock for around $2,000. For your trans you could have Promotion Powertrain beef it up to handle 750 tq for around $2,000.
