Please tell me this is nothing to be worried about!

I was checking underneath my car today, just trying to become familiar with everything, and saw something that concerned me.

Okay bare with me I'm still a newbie, so some of the verbage may be off.

At the rear of my tranny where the drive shaft yoke connects to the driveshaft, there was a small bead of tranny fluid on the transmission housing and I also noticed that the boot around the yoke looked like it had tranny fluid on it (on the bottom). Is that a problem? My car has never had any leaks. I wiped the fluid off and checked it again about 40 minutes later and NO new fluid had collected. So what do ya think?

I do not know if this has anything to do with it, but my front end was elevated up on ramps prior to finding the fluid and after i wiped it off.

ANOTHER QUESTION!

I also saw that there appeared to be oil or something coming somehow from my mufflers! Is this possible? How I saw it was that there was this black $h!T all over my rear suspension. It wasn't watery or anything it was more gooey than anything mixed with road dirt. I checked the welds at the back of the muffer to the end pipes and they seem alright, except for being alittle rusted, that's what sucks about Hawaii everything rusts!!!

So seriously if anyone can tell me what is going on I would appreciate it, thanks.

Tranny fluid should leak out the back of the trans even if it was tipped back... might have a rear main seal thats going bad... If its an auto it could be the tranny pan gasket.

As for the stuff on your suspension... I'd have to see it to know what your talking about...

And the rust isn't too bad here in hawaii... as long as you don't live by the beach, lol.

You said tranny fluid "should leak out" did you mean "shouldn't?"

Is it an auto or manual? b/c i have a manual and my yoke that connects the tranny to the drive shaft had a bad seal and i had to have it replaced. i would check the trans fluid level and make sure that its not low and then maybe have it looked at. and the rear end being dirty might be from a breather ontop of the axle that lets air out and can cause it to sweat around that area. i noticed i have some grim bulilt up around my rear end so check that out to just clean it up good and keep your eye on it

Yes tranny fluid can leak out of youre tailshaft seal but if it drips all the time the seal is bad

Gummy fluid on the mufflers indicates you have a bad pinion seal.

I love K-bay. My first tour of duty in the Navy was at the Makalapa clinic in Pearl.

Yeah the pinion seal is a 100 dollar fix! Some shops will want to take out the rear gears and differental and pinion gear to fix it, but it is not need. You can drop the driveshaft and put in a new seal. No need to tear into the rear end.

Thanks, I guess I should go get both looked at just in case. I checked on the tranny fluid leak today, and after my car sat all night, about 12 hours there was no new sign of any tranny fluid. But as far as the pinion seal, since I'm getting new gears anyway, should I just go ahead and get the new gears installed now? So both the seal and gears can be done at one time? Thanks again everyone.

Oh yeah until I get it into the shop for the rear end should I take it easy on the driving? Not that I'm always giving it the GAS!!!

you can buy a double lipped pinion seal from any local parts store for $10-15...i had to replace mine when i bought my car and did it again when i replaced my gears.... Then several quarts of rear end fluid....

drop the drive shaft, and replace the seal.... takes about 45 minutes

(it also helps to have an impact gun)

Hey amp, where are you planning to go to get your gears done? Mines already scheduled to get done at Four Wheel Parts... It was the only place I could find, lol.

Also, do you know of a dyno tuner on the island?

Yeah dude do the gears at the same time as the pinion seal, that way you dont have to pay twice on a rear pinion seal.

Your probly not going to see fluid coming from the rear trans seal again until you drive it and then park it and check it again.

You can put both those seals (rear tranny seal & pinion seal) in yourself if you are even a tiny bit mechanically inclined.

Sorry it took so long to get back, I was at work. Well now I don't know if i am going to NAKAS. I was talking with another friend of mine at work, who has a Mustang, I hadn't seen in a while so he didn't even know I got my Mustang. But anyway he gave me the number to another guy, so I want to check this one out. He said if I dropped his name the guy would give me a good price on whatever. Supposedly all this guy does is build Mustangs! Supposedly he is known to have built one of the fastest ones here on the islands, but we'll see. Works here for Ford but has his own garage at his home, even a lift.

NAKAS does have a Dyno. I thought they would work with me on using the tuner I have now, but they told me if I wanted a Dyno ran I would have to purchase a tuner from them. They wouldn't just give me a tune with my tuner, so that kinda sucked! But anyway I want to check this new contact out and see what he says. I doubt I will be able to see him until next Monday. If he sounds legite do you want me to let you know?

Everyone thanks again for all the knowledge. Well drove it to work parked it and came back about 6 hours later, didn't find any evidence of tranny leak anywhere. But I am going to have it checked on my next days off, or either get the parts and fix it LOL. Either way I want this new guy I found to check it out.
