could header bolts be the problem?

ok, so i bought my stang several months ago. ever since I bought it, theres a stench of exhaust, especially when the car is idling, and its pretty rediculous if u have A/C or heat on. so anyway, i figure its just a gasket or something that needs to be tightened. i take it to the muffler place they do a tightening of my exhaust system. i get the car, and the same problem still exists. recently the car was in the shop again and it was taken for a test drive by the mechanic. he said, "you know son, you're exhaust is leaking somewhere it stinks." i told him how I got it tightened, and he told me that its somewhat common for the "header bolt/bolts" ? to rust or break on this year mustang. i wasn't sure if he was puling it outta his ass or if I should have that checked. it seems to be getting worse too, not by the smell but by the sound. there seems to be a "spitting noise" like a rythmic "pst, pst, pst, pst" say every.... 1 second? maybe less, and its at certain RPM's that the sound is even more noticeable.

i know im good at making short stories long, sry, lol, I just try to give detail. any advice I can get would be fantastic.

If the noise speeds up with engine rpm's then it does sound like a header leak.

Do you have headers on the car, or the stock manifolds? I'm thinking if its your stock manifold then the EGR hose could have rusted where it hooks up to the stock manifold...

hope this helps,
Doc
