99 gt 460 swap
Well as of right now im about to sell off my current project (97 240sx with a skyline motor swap) and switch to a 99-04 mustang gt. Ive wanted one since I was a little kid and now that i'm all grown up and can actually build a car I wanna swap out a motor. My roommate just brought home a 79 camaro with a built 383 stroker, the second he started it up and I heard that cam lopeing I knew I had to get back into a muscle car.
butttt anywhoo. I originally wanted to do the lightning swap but that is just to much cash to throw down for just an engine and having to cut a hole in a 3in cowl doesnt really work for the sleeper look that I like lol so I wanna do a 460 swap. I figure I can get a high mileage stang for around 4500-5500 and drive it till winter and start up the swap. I plan on doing the 460 and then off the side picking up a stroked 532 and building it up then just swapping it over from the 460 so my questions here are going to be: - can I use a 95 k member and the aftermarket 460 mounts and still keep the stock 5 speed with a adapter? or am I going to have my local shop make me up some custom mounts and headers? - will my 8.8 rear hold or am I going to have to throw in a ford 9in - whats a good set of coilovers to hold the new front weight - am I going to have to switch to a sump style oil set up anything else I will need to know? I plan on using a painless wiring set up. and switch to a big break kit. Go Go Go :] already have some offers lined up with my 240sx so Im hoping to have my car in the next few weeks. |

i know one thing the stock rear and tranny wont hold to a 460 let lone if you build a 532.

to much fab imo...if anything a 302 to a 347 or a 351 to a 408 would be a tab easier.
or just a 4.6 to a 5.0

Well, you certainly won't be able to use the T45 that's in the GT. Bolt patterns between modular and 385 series blocks are totally different. A stock T45 wouldn't hold up to that much torque, anyway.
If you want to keep a stickshift in there, I'd look at a TKO-600. A T56 would probably hold up, and give you an extra gear, but I don't know if they've been adapted to the big-block. Most people here will probably suggest an automatic. A built C4 would be the most ideal, but if you're on a budget, a stock C6 will work. Personally, I think you'd have a much easier swap and make just as much power if you were to do a stroked 351W. My understanding is you can pull a 427 out of a stock Windsor block, and then you have the advantage of the much cheaper SBF aftermarket. You'll also end up with a lot less weight on the front end of the car, which will help you in whatever you're doing.

You can use the 8.8, not the tranny, and you can get a aftermarket k-member that will accept the bb. Assuming you are going to a carb setup, stay 85 and older on the block.
Edit: Using the 8.8 will reqire fortifying, and 9 in would probably be a better choice.

Well, if you insist on the big-block, do yourself a favor and get aluminum heads. That'll shed something ridiculous, like 80 lbs.

I thought my car was going to have a Procharger F1c too. but Plans can change. a 460 is over kill IMO. What makes you want to such a big bore?

Only way I'd go carbs is if fuel injection wouldn't survive the trip or was banned per the series rules (or it was something classic and Japanese).
Megasquirt FTW.

I like not having to think about the carb tune just because I'm heading up to the mountains for the weekend. More fun to just get in, turn the key, and go.
