Trans. problem??

Hello all. NEw to this site & got a few questions I hope all you can help me out with since I am not mechanically able.

I have an '02 GT with what I think is some kind of transmition problem. Here is what happens. As I am driving down the road(this is a manual trans) & shifting through the gears, all sounds & feels fine. But, as I am shifting from 4th into 5th, I can hear what I can only describe as a "rattling" sound. This sound is not constant once into 5th, but sporatic during. It only will make this sound if I am hitting the gas in 5th. Light gas or punching it, the same sound/loudness. If I am completly off the gas in 5th, I do not hear it though. I am hoping this fact will help narrow it down. This sound isn't real loud, but it is noticable. It does not seem to matter what speed I am going either. Slow or faster, it does it. Anyone have any idea. I would assume it is something inside the trans, but if you think it could be elswhere, I'm all ears.

Thanks all.

Welcome to the site.

Not too sure what it could be, but I'm sure some of the guys here can help point you in the right direction.

Hey DOC I just think it sounds like he is shifting into 5th too soon, without enough RPM's/Speed, due to the change in ratio between 4th and 5th. I know when I am on the HWY if I shift too soon, like around 55mph, I get the same rattle, but goes away as soon as my RPM's catch up, or just down shift. I'm not a Tech or anything McCallister, but I think it is just your shifting and not something wrong with the tranny. Could be wrong though

did you read all of his statements? he said it makes the sound when hitting the gas goin slow or fast in 5th, its not his shifting

To me it doesn't sound like something you should worry about. Just pay attention to it and take it to a tranny shop if it gets worse. And of course if you have alot of play money, go ahead and take it to a shop and have them open her up and find the problem.

Fifth gear is REALLY tall in these cars, I don't put mine in fifth unless I'm turning 2500 rpm in 4th and plan on going faster. If you're shifting earlier than that you're probably just lugging the engine and getting detonation. What octane gas do you use? If you're burning 87 you might want to try a tank of 89 or 92 and see if that doesn't help. But as a general rule of thumb, don't try to pull 5th gear at less than 1500 rpm and DO NOT give it more than half throttle until you're above 2000 rpm in fifth - otherwise you're just lugging the engine when you should have downshifted to 4th.

Very true, I have a 50 mph rule for 5th gear, Anything slower and it just bogs too much. 4.10's should help lower that speed for me though.

Thanks for the replies. I do shift into 5th a lot when going somewhat slow. No slower than 40 usually. I do not try & punch it ever in 5th that slow, but only if I do not have to to nothing more than drive down a flat road in town do I drive in 5th that slow. Otherwise, I downshift if I have to punch it the least bit. Save a wee bit of gas.

I guess it may be hard to really tell if I have the sound at higher speeds(highway or faster) since I have a convertible & the road noise makes it hard to really tell. So maybe it isn't at high speeds.

ONe of you said the fact that I do not get this sound off the gas, that I definitly should worry & it is not just going to slow in 5th?? Others said I'm just too slow in 5th. Which is right? I'd hate to have it torn up to have them just say "I don't see anything wrong." I wish there was a way for me to get an audio clip of the noise, but that'll never happen.

I'd love to swap out the gears, but live on my own & do not have that kind of cash. Wanted to throw some Bassani BX's on, but probably cannot anytime soon either.

Like I said before, dont take it to a shop if the sound doesn't get worse. It sounds like its not a big deal. One thing u could do is get someone u know that has alot of experience with cars and take em for a ride in your stang and let them hear the sound. They might have heard the same sound before and can tell ya what it most likely is.

I think Amp might be on to something. If your in 5th with stock gears doing about 40 mph the engine will vibrate a little bit more than normal as its being bogged down. Without hearing it I can't know for sure, but I'm guessing a heat sheild might be a little loose on one of your cats and at the lower speed with the vibration it makes noise.

If it is that, its nothing to be worried about. Simple test to do is get the car to make the noise again, and speed up slowly to see if it goes away. I personally don't go into 5th unless I'm doing 50+ others say faster. Let us know if it does go away when your going faster, and at what speed it stops.

Hope this helps,
Doc

Sounds like amphibrecon and Timber are both right. I get the same noise and it only happens if I cruise in 5th gear at low speeds. I don't recall ever hearing in 5th when doing over 60 MPH.

I get something like that when my girl drives the car.... She tries to shift into 1st when she's doin 30-35 mph... all I hear is the syncro crying as it spools up, then the gears make all kinds of noise. But I can't act upset or she gets mad, lmao

Yu're a better man than me. I'd be like are you doing? I let my wife drive my car this morning with the magnapacks on it. at first she was scared of the volume because it made her nervous. By the time we were on our way home she was down shifting to pass people.

Funny, but not smart. At least not if don't want her to marry it to a tree.

I'd love to see it, but I think the ocean might be a bit worse than the tree. LOL

I would just hope it gets stuck in the sand first.... I feel bad for McCallister now though. He's going to see all these replies that aren't any help...
