Rear Axles Upgrade?

Whats up guys, ive been reading up on this site for about a month now , and i like the mustang community more and more. To be honest i hated Mustangs until my buddy finally convinced me to drive his 99 Cobra. Needless to say i bought my 02 GT the next day. So enough bs and on to the qs.. Im finally getting the chance to start my build i want to aim around 350RWHP. I like to build cars from the rear to the front, so with a lower HP # do you think its worth it to upgrade to 31 spline axles? Im going to be running 3.73's, if that even matters..... Thanks ahead for the input

Well personally I think with that power level you will be fine on street tires. Now if you plan on running anytype of drag radial or slick then definatly upgrade. The better hooking the tires the more you have to worry about rear end strength. And lets see this Stang!

I was also wondering how much hp the axels and diff can handle.

Another thing I was wondering about is the cobra traction lock diff a good upgrade compaired to ones like the Eaton posi? I ask because the cobra one is about half the price of the ohers.

The only difference between that T-loc and a stock GT one is that it has carbon fiber clutch disks in it. So you can just take your t-loc and put in the disks to make it the same as the cobra differental. Here is the link to the disks.

And then you still have only a 28 spline t-loc!

Ahh, so to be safe it is better to just upgrade both.

Thanks

Why upgrade to the same spline when you could go to 31 spline for only the cost of a new t-loc? Wont the moser 28 hold the same amount as stock 28 or are they of a hardend steel?

I was actually going to ask about the 28 moser's but forgot when i was writing the post. I think ill be going with that. If i ever decide to aim at a higher hp # ill just upgrade.

I dont think there is a base number on how much a stock axle can take. I have seen stock cars break axles and I have seen some running 12s with stock axles, so its one of those things you have to make a choice about how you want to upgrade or take a chance.
If you order aftermarket axles like mosers, make sure you get hardened wheel studs also. Wheel studs can break also.
I personally think the 8.8 is one of the best differentials made, they can take alot of power.

You will decide to aim higher in the not so distant future. Everbody does eventually. I also wonder why you would upgrade to the same spline when you could go to 31 spline for only the cost of a new t-loc?

i am running the stock 28 spline and stock diff w/ 3.55's. i was launching at 4800 rpm on slicks n/a and leaving around 3k on slicks and the bottle. i dont know how long it would last, but i am ordering a 31 spline set up right now. most cars wont benefit from a 31 spline upgrade, but some will. it all depends on how much abuse your car will see.
