Stalling problem- please help
I'm at my wits end with my 01 GT. For the last couple of weeks, it has been stalling out on me with no warning signs. I would turn off the ignition, turn it back on, and be good to go. My first thought was fuel filter, so I changed it. It didn't fix the problem. I then changed the fuel pump, and to my suprise, it is still stalling out on me. When it stalls, the odometer shows dashes. a few times the check fuel cap has come on when i would try to restart it. I have a K&N, and serviced it as well, so that's likely not the problem. I checked my pcv valve, and I'm getting suction so it seems to be ok.
I also bought a code scanner, and the only code it has brought up has been the catalyst threshold out of limits, but i am figuring that this is due to my off-road x-pipe. I'm concerned that it's the computer. Has anyone had a similar problem and can offer any words of wisdom? I also would like to say that these forums are better than any service manual you can buy at the auto parts store. |

Have you tried cleaning the IAC? I'd start there.

I cleaned it using electrical cleaner and ran it for about 15 minutes. The idle was high the 5 minutes it took me to drive back from the store. I let it idle for 10 minutes, and it was slowly coming down to the normal range, but was still erratic. I have a 90 mile commute home from work, so I'll have to see what happens then. It stalled a few times this morning on me, but started back up every time. Any other thoughts?

Remove the IAC from the plenum. Spray throttle body cleaner in the open ports of the IAC liberally. Reinstall.
If that doesn't solve the problem, it sounds like either the rubber bellow in the IAC is torn, or the actuator in the IAC is sticking.

It doesn't give much warning when it stalls. Not much sputtering.

I removed it the first time when I used electrical cleaner. I removed it again and used intake cleaner this time. Idle is still high, but hasn't stalled yet....crossing fingers.

Ran diagnostics and got these codes:
P0430 - catalyst efficiency below threshold-bank 2( have no cats) P1157 - lack of ho2s22 switches- sensor indicates lean P0122 - throttle/pedal position sensor a circuit low input Could it be the tps causing my problems? |

Made the commute home(90 miles-all interstate), and it never stalled. My idle was very high(2000-2700) when I'd push in the clutch. Other than the idle, it ran ok and accelerated normal when I got on it. I unplugged the tps before I made my commute home and it dropped to almost normal idle after a few seconds.

Left the house this morning. Stalled a few times in the first 10-15 minutes of driving drove for an hour and half to work with no problems...Replace IAC and TPS? From the code I got yesterday about low input to the TPS, will replacing the sensor help or is this a further underlying problem?

It could be the TPS, or it could be the IAC. Without being there in person, that's the best diagnosis I can give you.

I have come to the conclusion that my car is possessed. It is still stalling out on me. Here are some of the instances:
Most common- Car stalls, odometer displays dashes, and fan kicks on.I cycle the ignition until the dashes go away and numbers return then the car usually starts Car stalls, the ani theft light flashes( sometimes with check fuel cap light on). I have to cycle the ignition more than above scenario, and it starts back up. Yesterday my fuel light was on for most of the day, but my car never stalled while it was on the 180 miles i drove it yesterday. It bucked a couple of times, but that was it. Today i drove about 5 miles with no stalling, but about 4 miles into my trip, I could hear my fan running. It's cool( about 50) outside and I wasn't running it hard. My gauge indicated normal temp. I arrive at my destination and turn the car off. I get back in a few minutes later and when I try to start it, it just turns over and I notice the anti theft light flashing. after cycling the ignition about 15 times, the anti theft goes away, and the car starts. I drive home and notice when i come to stops the idle drops to 500 and almost dies. I get home, turn it off and smell radiator fluid. The engine is not cooking hot, but definitely above normal which the gauge indicates. Now i guess the coolant temp sending unit is bad. I have changed my fuel filter, fuel pump, tps, cleaned my iac, and checked voltages on them as well. I'm at a loss for words. If anyone has any ideas, I would GREATLY appreciate it. |

I started it up to see what it would do. I noticed a little white smoke and water coming out of the exhaust. It died a couple of times, but started right back up.

maybe you have a short to your computer causing it to go in and out at times. Have you checked the wiring?

I will be checking the wiring to the computer and on the maf. I am not sure if I have mil eliminators-the x-pipe was on the car when I bought it 6 years ago. The check engine light has been on since I had the car, so would that mean I probably don't have them? The car has run like a clock until recently it just decided to act up.
