Functional Hood Scoop Debate
OK so i have this.. Predicament
last night my room mate and i got in a long debate over weather a hood scoop with a hole in the hood at the back of the scoop would be more likely to lift off than if you simply left the scoop on with no hole in the hood... (the scoop has no grill) on one side of the argument (my roommates side) if i leave the hood sealed there will be a small amount of air pressure built up but after that all of the air movement at say 80mph around it will have enough pressure to keep the hood on... he thinks that if i were to cut a hole in the hood at the back of the scoop there would be enough air movement under the scoop to try and lift it off even further... i disagree, i think that by cutting the hole in the hood it'll equalize the pressure on top and bottom of the scoop and i'm trouble free! now, i bought the car with the hood scoop detached. its missing the facory scoop grill and there is nowhere online to buy a new on without getting a whole new scoop. it was my bright idea to just glue the scoop back on thinking i could just get the grill on ebay. all of the 6 studs had been ripped of so i used amazing goop to put it back on its a silicone type of super glue. i scored/sanded both the surfaces of the scoop and the hood before gluing for better adhesion. that being said the scoop is not as strong so it would be with the 6 factory bolts holding it onto the hood, But the glue worked incredibly well. i've been lucky enough to only do city driving to where theres not much pull on the scoop but i have to make a trip friday night and hit the highway so i need to make a decision by then! or i can just let the highway decide if i keep my scoop hahah Please give any input or suggestions you have if youve made your scoop funcional how well does it perform? i need to figure somethin out help me please!!

Honestly I don't think it would make a difference but it's up to you if you want to make a whole in your hood.

I highly doubt your hood would tear off going highway speeds with or without a hole. Those scoops create lift even with the cover on your can see it moving at decent speeds. Also the fake grille is set back an inch or so so there is always some drag there.

if you watch the testing videos in the air tunnel, the air just flows right over it until it gets well past 100 mph, thats why the ram air effect on cars like
WS6 only starts around 100, I know the mustang wind tunnel video is on utube somewhere, I have watched it before....

cutting a hole will reduce the force wanting to tear the scoop off and won't be any noiser. Mine is rock steady at all speeds.
The only draw back to cutting hole is water intrusion and the water seems to find it's way to the spark plug wells causing a missfire. If by some chance i have to drive my car in rain I just tape up the hole

Im not sure about lift, but i know on my hood the vents are on the back of the scoop. and this made a WORLD of difference in cooling the car! the air flows through the bumper/radiatior and right out of the back of the hood-

Im not sure if this was said but you drill it out and leave 1.3 of the hood part. Cut the top 2/3s ..
If you get that at all It will not fly off if it is screwed on.. Also I believe F8L has a bar in the middle of the scoop as a support

Even if you cut a hole in the hood and air is flowing through it, what function is that providing? You're not pushing fresh air anywhere useful. If anything, you could be screwing up the airflow dynamics that help pull air through your radiator and cause your engine temps to increase. You'd be better off figuring out a way to let air escape out the back of the hood then trying to cram air in from the top.
