HAHA is a great title for this... yeh if you have a programer you can do it off that. or a ford dealer should be able to calibrate it for you. Grats on the 4:10s

im starting to think my installer is a cheap bastard. i live in western Massachusetts, and there's hardly any street scene here, and finding a mechanic that will work with after market parts on my car is a bitch. ive made appointments at places to get things done, only to find they wont even touch ANY part of my car because of the illegal exhaust. but anyways the guy i go to now owns his own business and does the majority of the work on "souped-up" cars around here. by trade he's a pipe bender and makes custom exhaust systems, but i dunno it seems to be a hassle every time i wanna get something done. for example, not adjusting my speedometer when he installs a new gear set on my car, haha. I was referred to him by a friend at work who said he does good work for a good price, but i dunno, i really got freaked out today. his shop is like one of those places where u go to pick ur car up and all his buddies are hanging out there, and on fridays everyones got beers cracked before work is out lol, its a bit hick ya know? so anyways i go to get my car today, the gear fluid is supposed to be getting drained and replaced after the break-in i did on them, and my exhaust was getting tweaked a little bit. i walk in the door, and some kid, or young man rather lol, is all up in the rear end of my car doing work on it. i dont know it just kinda pissed me off, cause i thought he did all the work there. and the kid was like, oh ya he went out for a few to grab some stuff he'll be back stop back in an hr. it just makes me feel uneasy and it seems really unprofessional. i wish I had gotten into cars when I was younger so I could be doing this shit myself. btw im 20 and only really got into cars several months ago

I wouldn't feel bad about not getting into cars sooner. You can always learn. Just don't be scared to tackle a job, and know when to ask a question. Hell, I've been into cars, but didn't learn alot till I was 17-18.

Hell, I'm an old man compared to you Ddash, and I just got into it a couple years ago myself. Like the man said, don't be affraid to get into it a little and get your hands dirty. Places like this great forum make it all the easier. I find people are more than happy to share their knowledge and help a brother/sister out.

Shit dude I'm pushing 50 and when FHP pulled me over for an “unreasonable” amount of speed 95 in a 55. I told the trooper him hey new gears and new tiers, I need to get re-calibrated; he said ticket. I than produced my wife’s thong and told if he proceeded I would dance in it for him and his dashboard camera. Got a verbal warning and he drove off shaking his head. Those who are bold win!

I have been looking at getting a set of gears installed locally, not many places want to do it and the people who will, want a boatload of money. If I tackle them myself, can the dealer correct my spedo so I don't have to dish out 400 bucks on a tuner.
My main concern is shimming the pinion/carrier. With a new pinion bearing, will the factory shims be the correct shimming if I re-use them. My car has less then 10K on it. |

Getting the shop to let you be there when they are doing the install is a great way to gain some knowlege, for someone who is just starting out. I started working on cars when i was 13, and once i got my job at the shop there were guys asking left and right to be at the install. Never bugged me. Some shops may have a liability with insurance for you being in there (but there are ways around that).
And BTW- I think its better when guys/girls start working on cars when thier older cause they dont get that "i know it all" attitude. F**K that pisses me off.

I think i'm gonna go ahead and tackle this myself. The job itself isn't that hard, my only concern is shimming properly. With my car only having 11,000 kms, I think I should be pretty safe.
If I buy a new pinion bearing/crush sleeve, and gears. Can I swap to 4:10's and reuse my stock shims. Is there any diagrams or manuals I can look at to show me torque specs and how to properly shim the carrier and pinion? When it comes to setting this stuff up its all new to me, I know you have to set backlash etc??? Thanks guys! Like everyone said, doing something yourself is more rewarding and in this case...i'll save about 750 dollars in labour. |
