It's Alive!!

Hopefully a few of you guys remember my last thread of my new motor being finished. Well last Wednesday night at 10:00 pm she finally came to life. I spent 3 days trying to find the right starter for my car and after going through 4 brand new starters I bought a remanned starter that worked. Been driving the car for the last week and boy does it feel strong. I was told to put 1,000 miles on the new motor to break it in properly and I only need 750 more miles to finally be able to put the pedal to the metal. Hopefully I have been going about it the right way. I have been switching back and forth from shifting at 3,000rpms and 4,000rpms at 3/4 throttle. Around the first couple of weeks in January I will be taking the car to Dallas to get my new n/a tune put on as well as my tune for the 150 shot of nitrous. Just wanted to share my story.

2k rpms? as long as you break it in by giving it an overall mix of driving through the rpm range (not readline lol) and all gears then it should be okay. at least thats what i thought.

Well i honestly dont know the exact procedure to break in cams on a mod motor. but on almost every pushrod motor build i have been apart of, was required to run the engine at 2000 rpm for 20 min. But sounds like a nice build. Hope all goes well.

correct me if i am wrong willy mo but doesn't the cam on the old 5.0 motors go inside of the block instead of sitting on top of the heads? with our cams they do not have to break in and have never heard of having to break them in. i could be wrong but do not think i am. i have done a lot of research on different setups and from what i have found out the timing on the 2v sohc motors is one if the easiest types and quickest to time. i have not once ran the cams at a certain rpm to break them in and this is the third motor that they have been on in my car.

push rod motors use timing chains as well. and you are mistaken about a SOHC motor being easy to time. They are very easy to screw up. I dont know where you found this info. Your break in a cam/s to seat the cam/s to the bearings.

dangit you quoted me before i edited my post. and yes i know the old 5.0s used timing chains as well. im not a complete moron. im mistaken on them being easy to time??? done it three times already and to me not being a mechanic and only been doing motor work on my own car for two years it seems to be pretty straight forward and simple to time them especially if you have marked chains.

I am going to assume you have not degreed the cams in a SOHC motor. The timing of the cams are very important, as if the cam timing is off you will hear teh drummer boy in your cylinder. (valve hitting piston)

yeah they are very important to time. which is why i turn my motor over by hand a few times just to double check the timing of the cams and make sure there is no clearance issues. i would never just install the cams slap on the chains and fire the car up and take that chance. that is extremely stupid and i am sure there have been a ton of people who have made that mistake before but i dont like taking chances with expensive crap.
