I thought it might have been some timing chain slap, so i took the cover off and found my timing chains wore through the tensioner arms by a significant amount and had alot of slack. I fixed those and thought my problem was solved, but everything was still there.

I've had the valve cover off while listening with a scope...you can still hear it more internally than anything.

I wish i made a video before i tore it apart. I did check for exhaust, but found nothing. Towards the end it got very loud and started sounding more like a knock. Loud enough to where I was scared to turn it on because it sounded like something was about to go seriously wrong.

Since the mechanic swore that it was upper valvetrain, I bought a set of heads from someone just to do a quick swap...they'll be here on friday.

you could have had detonation and eyed out your connecting rod. that wont leave metal just make a knock noise.

I believe he is saying you could have elongated/warped the hole the pin sits in. And to go back to my other post, what I was told is you can pull the piston down far enough to get to the pin while keeping the piston rings in the cylinder. I have read/heard that from a couple places but im not sure if its true.

If you have your heads off and have the timing cover off, you might as well just pull your rotating assembly and see what happened. No need to guess and waste money after you take a good look at the actual parts.

worst case scenario I'll just put it back together and sell it as is to someone who wants to rebuild it

sounds to me like a rod bearing,,, you can pull the oil filter off cut it open pull out the filter ant look at it while it is spread out to see if there are any gold metal flakes in it,,,,,i could see how changing the rod from under the engine would work that could be a big time time saver
