knowledgeable boosted guys come in

I'm trying to decide if I can add some more timing in my tune. How much timing do you guys run? How much compression? How much boost? Also, this is on 93 octane gas

Not really something id screw with personally, but thats up to you. As for your ?'s.

93, 12*, factory compression, 7-8 lbs just varies with temp etc.

This is my 1st boosted ford modular , but the research I've done says 15* tops . I'd play it safe on timing and just up the boost .

what ever you guys are boring, i run 18-20# 9.4-1 cr, 11.8 af, 18# of boost, winter i see 20#. big thing is to inspect plugs when your ajusting timing, you will see a timing mark on the strap. i would not go past the center of the 90 degree bend on the strap.

15 degrees at 6,000rpm running 10-11psi was where my car was when the blower came off. I was running 18 degrees until I got detonation and blew a chunk off my #2 piston. Now I have a forged bottom end.

And extra couple hp is not worth engine damage. Keep it at 15 with mid 11s on the AFR and enjoy having a working motor.

oh yeah i forgot to say that i run 70/30 meth in my car to run that amount of timing, along with and ic my car has had over a year of high mph pulls with tons of timing and never failed. btw its hard to hear ping or knock in these cars. i would do it the way i explained. keep a spark plug socket in the car do a 3rd gear pull and as soon as you get done put it in nutral and shut down the car. pull the driver side rear spark plug and check the timing mark

My tuner and I are deliberating on what to do. He feels we can add some more. I'm at 14* right now. I was plannin on pullin plugs but I don't wanna pull all the plugs just to check them. I was told you can pull the leanest 2 cylinders and check the plug. I would think that 7 and 8 would be the leanest. Stal, do you mind sending me your number? I know how brad tunes and if he tuned your car like that then I don't see why I can't tune mine like that.

When driving on the street with anything other that stock exhaust, you will be hard pressed to hear any detonation. I didn't hear any even when the damage was done to my motor. The only reason I knew about it was cause the piece that blew off got pinched between the piston and my spark plug and closed the gap. Then my car wouldn't run right cause it was only hitting on 7 cyls.

dont ask me why i have old spark plugs laying around but if you look real close to the strap you will see the 2 diff colors. that is the timing mark. the farthest up you should have it is in the middle of the strap. as you add timing you can see the mark move up the strap. the whole listening by ear thing may work but this is a visual way to know when enough is enough. the hottest spark plug will be the driver side back spark plug. this is because the water does not pass threw there, unless you have a coolant mod done

Stock motor, Vortech V1 S non-intercooled 9psi, 15.75 degrees of timing on 93, 11.7 afr

If you're running meth or an intercooler you can safely do 17-18 degrees on 93. Your tuner just needs to make sure to have the tune pull timing as the iat temps start to rise.

Look really close..... You can see what your plugs will look like if you run 18* of timing with 10+ psi

It's all in the tune. Your tuner needs to know at what iat temp to tell the computer to decrease the timing. My total timing is at 15.75 but the timing gets decreased at certain temp increments. I'm down to 12 degrees once my inlet temps hit 170 degrees. If your temperature never goes above say 90-100 degrees i don't see 17-18 degrees being a problem.

Intake air temp isnt the only thing that cause engine damage. My piston blew a chunk when the ambient air temp was below 50*

My IAT never got above 150 with repeated pulls on the dyno at higher ambient temps than that
