What am I doing wrong with my shifter?

Ok, somehow I just don't get it. I have my MGW shifter, but I can't seem to grasp how I'm supposed to adjust the knob. How am I supposed to get it to the position I want it, and get it to stay there? Pictured are all the things that came with it, aside from the actual short shifter, and the tools needed to install that. I ordered the "deluxe jam nut" with this, so I suppose this is it? All I have is the jam nut, and washer. How does this work!?

put the jam nut on the shifter, then the washer i suppose, then put the knob on and when you get the knob the right way, "Loosen" the jam nut so that it jams against the shifting knob, there for keeping it in place.

is taht what you want to know?

Yeah you answered perfectly, I was just hoping it was at least a little more complicated then that, because it seems like the knob comes loose so easily? Maybe I really need to put some elbow grease into it. I've tried it just about every way with the washer and jam nut.

It's not any more complicated than that. Lock nut, lock washer, knob. Tighten the lock nut into the knob.
