This thread is ruining my hope of running a 13.9X due to my 285 18" Sumitomos that just do not hook up on launches. What you say is very true tbird, I have my shift light set at 5,600 just because it feels so gutless above that, up to 6K.

Haven't had the Mustang to the track yet, just do a lot of practice runs on a stretch of road near me that has a 1/4 mile marked out. (Bunch of guys run their Jap bikes back there in the summer) I just hope that with the 3.73's, BBK CAI, and if I run the 93 octane tune, I'll be able to put down a 13.9X. Launching is just going to be tricky. Gonna have to use the T/C on launch, and keep it low enough at the same time so it doesn't bog down too much.

....Or I can just steal an aluminum 5.4 out of the 2011 Shelby GT500 and run 11's.

Thanks LOL, just trying to help out.

Myslow makes a goo point about the slicks being a bit lighter and they are "in-sprung" weight which makes even more of a difference.

My suggestion to the OP is to get a shift light and ignore the tach. Set your shift light to 5400 and just shift according to the light. Make a couple runs, and see how it does. Then bump it up 50-100 rpm and see what your next couple runs look like. Keep raising the rpm til you see no more gains or any loss of performance. The name of the game is consistency. A shift light will help you with that. Only change 1 thing from one run to another. You need to figure out what changes are actually helping or hurting. You make more than 1 adjustment, you won't be able to tell which is hurting or helping.

Thanks again everyone. Too be honest with you I think my problem was the guy in the other lane as dumb as that sounds. I started racing against a couple cars that were a good match with mine and I was focusing more on beating them then getting a great time. Another problem I had was hot lapping my car. I was having so much fun beating this s197GT that I kept racing back to back until my clutch finally told to settle down. Im not disappointed with the times I ran but when I go back again ill be focused more on my shift points and launches, then beating the guy beside me. The longest cool down of the night was around 15 minutes when I swapped from the slicks too drag radials. Yea I know its dumb but the fun factor was high and it was my first time at a 1/4 mile track. My shift light is set at 5,800rpm's but I wasn't focusing on it as much as I should have.

most things are covered pretty well, but the thing that cant be stressed enough is practice (especially at a drag strip with a stick since the odds are stacked against you making repeatable passes from the start).

generally speaking in my experiance, you'll need about 100 passes to sort out a minor mod, 200+ to sort out a major one.

It will take me a lifetime too make that many passes. I just want a fun street car that may see the track twice a year. Who knows that could possibly change in the future. Thanks Casper!

no problem bro, you kinda started a technical type thread, but if your only going to the track twice a year, I'd just leave the car alone & enjoy it.

you're not gonna see the full gains from any mod without dialing in the car is where I'm going, so my advice would be leave the 3.73's in (much easier to control the rpm's & you wouln't need to be so precise) & get a set of 26" slicks or bias ply dot tires & have fun with it.

if your curious, a typical year for someone serious about drag racing usually amounts to 500+ passes a year, thats why its easy to say what I did about taking your time to sort out mods.

Wow! Honestly I doubt i've hit redline 500 times in the year i've owned this car. I don't drive it hard and in some peoples mind may be a waste but that wasn't my purpose in buying it to begin with. I've always wanted a mustang and know if the powers there I can play with it. I put over 18k miles on my truck this year versus 6k with my car.

Yup, I made about 250 passes this year, but my car broke twice this year including a blown rear end and I did an auto swap. I'm sure if it was up and running all season, I would have been around 500 passes easy

I have 3.90s and spraying 100/125/150 depending on who's jets I can borrow. What size tire should I be running. I get to the line at 5900 rpms in 4th gear on street tires. I have the 17 inch stocker on right now

by the sound of what you said there, 26's are right about where you need to be.
